Johannesburg is a strange place. It was especially strange growing up there in the 80’s and 90’s and in many ways I consider myself lucky to have experienced Jozi through that period of time.

I got to live through the unjust apartheid regime and then experience the joy of the rainbow nation. Not only did Jozi have a political and freedom orientated change in the early 90’s but rave hit us hard and because we had been segregated and shut off from global popular culture for so long we nose dived in- and consumed freedom to the highest level.

This song is a nod to that time and my up bringing in Johannesburg. The vocal reminds me of the beautiful township style vocals that the likes of Mariam Makeba are so famous for. Whilst the thumb piano is so engrained in South African musical culture that it would seem wrong not to include it in this tune. 

Turn it up and stomp your feet, and feel the energy and joy that only Africa can bring.

JOZI DAYZ

The song Turn It Up Bright tells the story of person who is lost in the depth of depression and the strong desire to rescue her at any cost. In a world filled with dark chaos, we all have it within our hearts to seek out those who need our help and bring them out of darkness. Most people who suffer from depression will not ask for help for fear of being judged or dismissed. As the songwriter, I am thrilled to have collaborated with Herbie Hatchback, Jose Dicaro and Will Konitzer on uniquely different takes on Turn It Up Bright.
