2nd edition of CHTHONIC is taking place Friday, 24, and Saturday, 25 November, at IKLECTIK and Ormside Projects on Saturday night from 11:30 pm.

Deriving from the Greek word “χθών”, a more direct translation of Chthonic would be “χθόνιος” which means "under, or beneath the earth”. CHTHONIC II seeks to engage with the darker elements of experimental sound and performance whilst fostering an alternative environment open to self-expression for both our audience and performers.

Our first evening explores ritual practices and contemporary queer performance culture. Commissioned by IKLECTIK, Future Ritual presents their latest piece of work, “A Felling”, a journey through ideas surrounding death, remembrance, transformation and rebirth.

Our second event sees us inviting four experimental acts all at the forefront of their respective fields, whilst the third event takes the IKLECTIK programme out of the traditional venue environment and into the late night club context of Ormside Projects.

Sound Input: Rattleing from boiling glass in a sauce pan.
Sound Output: Noisification based on poly rhythmical african music and noise music plus vocals from the guts, no sequencing or instruments involved in the process. 4 Contact mics are the main source for it and filtering and looping techniques using Kaoss Pad and Shermann Filter Bank.

Wednesday. I’m here to take photos. A low makeshift stage, a compact but serious-looking PA system, a large white screen hovering on the back wall; this must be one of those ‘AV’ gigs. Plastic chairs scatter around the darkened hall, and the audience, in turn, scatter around those. The gloom won’t facilitate image acquisition, though I hope the residual glow from the projected visuals will help. Music gear lies flat on the stage-floor, no tables or stands are used; guitar pedals, drum pads, a synthesiser, cables, and a couple of stainless pots on electric hobs, water simmering. It’s a typical electronic music setup, but with bonus points for potential electrocution hazards. A burly, hirsute, monk appears, and begins to coax sounds from the assorted implements, their red LEDs teasing my lenses with unfulfilled promise of illumination. The pots have contact mics on them, and small metal objects within are disturbed by the disturbance of the bubbling water. The microphones capture this activity and transmit it through the effects, while the monk tweaks the controls and triggers the synth. I’m situated near the PA, and it’s getting noisy. I fumble for earplugs in the depths of my camera bag but can only find one; my right ear gets lucky, the left ear gets fucked - suck it up, ear. Darkness, noise - I can deal, it’s still good. Because the water-loud is not enough, the monk bellows into a microphone from time to time. It’s like a metal gig without guitars, where the most ‘metal’ things are the kitchenware on the stage. Cursing the low platform, I squirm on the floor in search of better angles. Prostrate before a monk boiling up loud electronic swamp soup - yeah, Wednesdays can be like that. There was a spoken introduction by the artist - I wasn’t paying much attention, but I was able to infer that he didn’t give a shit whether we liked it or not, he was going to do it anyway, and somebody didn’t buy him a horse for his birthday, but maybe I imagined that last part. As I continue shooting and crawling, I realise that the sonic blasts are not random, and there is a twisted intelligence at work, even though the creator is plainly unwell at a fundamental level. The noise and visuals build in intensity, with more white light, and being light-starved, I seize the opportunity to shoot frantically, but - abruptly - the wave breaks, the energy ebbs, the noise trickles away, and it is finished. The monk promises subsequent explanation, but I don’t get the impression he really wants to do it. I pop the blue foam plug from my ear, and stow my camera gear on a sticky white plastic table. The monk and his helpers pack their tools quickly; the building will be locked shortly, and they have beer to drink, and non-explanations to not-give to persistent stay-behind spectators. I head into the night, with sticky-bottomed cameras, one ringing ear, and a new found interest in contact microphones.

The SoundPod has been custom-made for EventTwo. It contains a collection of contemporary and historic sound artworks that can be selected and listened to using professional-quality headphones. The 15 works being presented have been curated by Jon Weinel. The SoundPod itself was designed and built by Sean Clark.

We hope to make the contemporary tracks available online following the Event Two exhibition.

Jose Macabra Flow Ritual Part #1

Jose Macabra, is an artist, sound designer, producer, video director, radio DJ/podcast maker and curator. 

Jose teaches Sound Arts and Music Production at the London College of Communications, UAL and other educational establishments. His work nourishes many influences, from the industrial and noise panoramas, together with a legion of related genres such as ritual and the darker flavours of techno, blended with sound art, soundscape, art brut and experimental music.
 
Jose has worked with and for Kimatica Studio, Persona Collective, Ernesto Tomasini, Ron Athey, HR. Giger, Sally Mann, J. Milo Taylor, Nicola Serra, Christian Duka, Martin Delaney, Eraldo Bernocchi, FFIN DANCE Company, Rum Luck Theatre Company, Persona Collective, UCL, UAL, SAE Institute, HMPPS Belmarsh and Unite the Union, to name a few.
 
Jose Macabra has performed in art establishment venues, including Barbican, Tate Modern, National Gallery X, Oxford University, Tate Liverpool, BFI, The Photographer's Gallery, Waterman's Centre, The Museum of Consciousness, Camberwell College of Arts, London College of Communication and Kent University. Works involving Jose's music and sound design have toured significant festivals in London, Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin, Hamburg, Athens, Brussels, Milan, Barcelona, Lisbon, Manchester, Liverpool and other cultural centres.
 
Jose's research interests include Electronic Music, Field Recording, Noise Music, Industrial Music, Improvisation, Sound Art, Performance Art, Queer Studies, Ritual Art Practice, Collaborative Practice, Altered States of Consciousness through Sound, Horror, Darkness, Film, Surrealism, Automatic Writing and  Spatial Audio.
