Sometimes you get a new effects pedal and just jump right in and start making sounds. That was this time. This was made with an Electro Harmonix Super Ego synth engine pedal. I haven't really used it much after creating this track, but it's still a really cool pedal! Segments of this recording are featured on the opening track of Riding Shotgun's album "Postcards From Easy Street"

I wrote this piece to serve as the sonic backdrop to another jaw dropping visualization and fly through of Hubble data. In this viz, we fly through Hubble's 32nd anniversary image of a close grouping of five galaxies known as Hickson Compact Group 40.

I adapted a version of this recording for use in a scientific visualization exploring the formation of stars and planets, available here:

We see how dense clumps of gas and dust collapse under their own gravity, leading to the formation of stars and planetary systems. This version of the music introduces some airy guitar and melodies that would have competed with the visual story and were left out for simplicity. But lucky you, you get to hear them now.

I'm a science visuals developer at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, MD. I create imagery and visualizations using data from the Hubble and Webb Space Telescopes. I also compose music to support our visualization videos. When not working on space visuals, I'm the guitarist of the Boston-based instrumental space jam trio Riding Shotgun.
