This is a song I wrote for my dear Dad, Francis Lawrenson, who passed away on the 20th January. It is a deeply personal song and the most challenging and emotional piece of music I've ever written. He was a much loved dad, grandad, husband, little brother, friend and doctor, who will be sorely missed. The song is being released as a ‘pay what you want’ download. All the money raised will be donated to St Gemmas Hospice, who did such a fantastic job of caring for my Dad in his final months.

"Reaching for the Song" is the first debut release of mine as a solo artist. The song itself is moving, personal, engaging and and described also as "uplifting' by some. It is open to interpretation with its meaning -as are any songs in my opinion as an artist and listener/fan of music generally - hoping to reach to listerners who connect with the notion that sometimes we have good intentions, try our hardest at something and yet are "falling" or feel we are failing despite our big heart's intentions.

“I had that motif going around my hands, those two voices the three semi quavers then five. I loved the space in it, the simplicity, the grace, the push and pull of it, it felt a bit patient. Then the rubato sections lifted to somewhere else outside that formula.”

I had a long break from work for the end of 2023 and was mostly at home with a piano, my daughter, partner, some synths, a notebook and a lot more time than I was used to. I was finding it hard to do anything except play the piano basically. The surface level simplicity of it and the immediacy made it easy to become embroiled in and over those couple of months I wrote the 6 piano pieces. At the same time over those months I was also writing heavily in my notebook, something I hadn’t done consistently for years. It was towards the end of the projects I noticed the two things had been created side by side but without interaction. Looking back through the notes I’d noticed that I'd been writing about things I was thinking and feeling which to me was interesting because I was doing the same thing with the piano. 

Of course I'm really into film and drama so the thought of combining the words and music felt completely natural and interesting. Originally I recorded them myself just as voice notes and it felt like something. It was interesting but to me it felt too close and maybe too self-involved. This is when I thought about getting someone else to read them. I watched Alan Clarke’s “Road” (1987) a few years back at a screening and was blown away by it but also by Jane Horrocks. Her performance in that and also in Mike Leigh’s “Life Is Sweet” I was completely captivated. With “Road” I hadn’t encountered that much writing that dealt with the frustrations, tragedy and beauty of growing up in a working class part of the UK, it really resonated with me. Having someone else read the notes did two things for me. I wanted someone who was a good actor who would bring something to it but also I wanted a northern, Greater Manchester or close to, accent and a woman. I grew up mostly around women and I like to hear those accents and rhythms represented. It feels a bit like home. But thinking about it now my Grandma especially, would have loved to hear an accent like Jane’s speak those words that are close to a diary, poetry and prose. The second thing, having someone else read it, to me, made it more interesting and a bit safer. It made it feel more like theater or a film. I could detach from my own words that i didn’t ever really plan to share and experience them in a slightly more removed way, maybe it made it easier to assess them or incorporate them thoroughly. Also simply, it was more fun and interesting to do.

Using them to almost frame the piano pieces and add context but not too explicitly is a pretty interesting idea too. Usually you don’t get context with music. You can read the press release or the liner notes but you don’t get an expansion on it as part of the work itself in the form or some prose. Even with the words people add those two things together, the music and words and still get something I don't expect or I didn’t mean, like music, art, they project themselves on it still a lot, the words just mix that pot a bit more.
