Welcome to Composition Sketchbook!

An exploration into realtime composition, process, decision making, music playing and the compositional journey.

I’m Joseph Buckler, a composer predominately making work for soundtracks and soundscapes.

One thing that I’ve wanted to do for a while, is to take the concept of an artist’s sketchbook and use it to make a compositional sketchbook. A place where experimentation with composition can happen. A place where compositional process can be allowed to run free, and a place to create new music and sounds, in realtime with a focus on the process and the decisions that lead to a sketch of a composition. 

The concept of this podcast is to make new compositional sketches, in under an hour, that can be experienced as the process happens and unfolds. 

In this first episode, my composition sketchbook entry is based around the sound exploration of a river, recorded in Stogumber, Somerset. I experiment with composing elements that can interact with the river.

In this fourth episode, my composition sketchbook entry is based around a visit to the Quantock Hills, Somerset, in the mist. With collaboration at the heart of his process, and through a stance that investigates, explores and enhances a project's emotional and narrative context, Joseph works with acoustic and electronic instruments, both independently, but also in collaboration with organic and found sounds. He also writes and conducts music for orchestra, small ensembles and choirs. Joseph makes music that soundtracks and soundscapes, encapsulating emotions and space. Working with production teams from diverse disciplines, Joseph brings the musical and sound worlds of interdisciplinary work to life.
