Show Me Where It Hurts celebrate their debut single release live at Lucha Lounge, Friday, April 4, with special guests Betty Loves Elvis.

“Openers, Show Me Where It Hurts, proved an inspired selection with their original and beguiling Rhodes electric piano, drums and vocals approach. The Auckland duo held it down and held their own in the face of what must well have felt an intimidating prospect, given the pedigree of the headliner [Bobby Womack, Civic Theatre, Auckland, May 18, 2013] – and for a solid, swinging 45 minutes engaged early comers, who were rewarded for their promptness with a hot and sometimes rollicking performance from singer, keyboardist Josh Hetherington and drummer Ronny Haynes. Both contrasting and complementing the main attraction, it was a performance in the true spirit of the occasion, and it ended up feeling just right.

Show Me Where It Hurts is the hip-shakin’ new duo featuring Josh Hetherington on vocals and Fender Rhodes electric piano and Ronny Haynes on drums and vocals. Stepping out in all their finery – finest of threads, finest of tunes – Show Me Where It Hurts peddle a sweet and savoury smorgasbord of swingin’ sass and soul, and fingerpoppin’ rock-a-rolla! With a hands-on-hips line on the groove, Show Me Where It Hurts gonna make you wanna move!

Their Fender Rhodes electric piano-driven sound is the driving, growling and chiming harmonic force of a straight-up, funk-fuelled rock ’n’ roll combo playing stomping, swinging, classic piano-based pop songs. 

As the band themselves put it: 'We’ll hit the fuckers with a tune they can hum, a sound they can’t ditch, a groove that don’t lie and a scratch they can’t itch. Soak it all up with a fat and freaky bottom end not heard since Miles ran the voodoo down, top it all off with a reckless and ill-advised line in romance, regret and redemption and we’ll slay them in the aisles!’

Show Me Where It Hurts

I've finally gotten around to putting these out for a listen. A collection of 4-track recordings of mine from the late '90s, under the name The Cosmetics (used as a moniker for my stuff outside of the band I was in, Thorazine Shuffle, and later as the name of my follow up group from the early 2000s).

‘Four-Tracks and the Truth (Shoebox Symphonies from the late 20th Century)’ is a collection of my favourite 4-track songs and demos written and recorded an age ago with great (and somewhat misguided) ambition on their behalf for the ages!

Other than to patient friends and family, only a few were heard outside of the bedrooms, baches and sheds they went down in ('Can't Believe' was nominated for best independent song at the inaugural 95bFM Music Awards in 1998 following weeks at the top of the bFM Top Ten, and 'More the Anyone' was re-recorded at York St Studios for the Thorazine Shuffle album 'Your Own PR' released in 1999).

Augmented in some instances with great performances by friends such as Rob Young and Aaron Carson, most are poppy, lyrical songs, recorded on modest equipment, but with the invocation of the manifestos of Brian Wilson, Phil Spector and George Martin at the base of the vision for the production, in one way or another, of each.

In this sense they fail unequivocally (not having The Wrecking Crew at my disposal made things a little more difficult, for instance). But there's still a genuine and overall freshness, charm and originality to the songs, and even a little greatness in some of their finer moments (at least to these ears, 12 or more years on from most of the cuts). Hope you think so, too.
