Each year now, my now five year old son wants to do a co-write with me. He wanted to do a song about "years" this year, and all the places he's been since he's been alive. We wrote this one together, and as we are in the twilight of FAWM at the moment, just simple acoustic and vocal on this one, as I think it serves the material pretty well along with my time constraints.

What if Jesus had a brother Stevus? Lightly inspired by my buddy @drivelmonk working on Paul Bunyan myths, I was thinking it would be fun to do a silly fable about Jesus's brother Stevus.

I'm A Real Spider Man

Part of a video challenge for FAWM. I provided the drums and bass part to 3 other folks to finish a collaboration. I also forked this into my own song here to finish my version of the song, and have had this sitting in the can to see how it will eventually compare to the collaboration. Now everyone's parts are are least composed, so I think it's safe to post up my version without influencing the other. 

Had fun making this; probably took 3-6 hours to track and mix and another 3-4 to edit and create the video, since I'm not a video person. Hope y'all enjoy. I'll link the collaboration version too once it gets finished. Silly hat is there b/c I cut my forehead on a server rack that week and had a big bump + bandaid.

On This Careless Ground (rough)

This song is a joke about a lot of shonen or seinen Manga/Anime/Wuxia/light novel/web novels that I read, that all seem to follow the same trope, where the Main Character (MC) may start out normal or Over Powered, but usually just "for their current power level or stage of cultivation". The story proceeds to pit them into increasingly more ludicrous battles with ever more powerful and about-the-same-amount of arrogant idiots who get stomped by the MC, with the plot dropping the MC into situations where "only people at X power level or below can enter the secret realm to search for treasures'' or similar. Any time the evil and also stupid big brother or parent of some poor sap that has been humiliated or killed by the MC shows up and would rationally end the storyline with "and then the main character was summarily destroyed", the MC is saved by his magical plot armor somehow.

This song is poking fun at the powering up, the leveling up, and the structure of those stories, around the theme of "plot armor". It exists in regular TV and movie media as well, where the hero also somehow miraculously escapes or gets into challenges that somehow only stimulate his or her growth, when the normal outcome of that scenario would be, "and then they died, obviously." Plot armor basically means, until the story is done and the author is through with the character, they simply cannot die due to the magical shield that the author cannot allow it.

One show that really earned my respect was Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan, one of very few shows or any media I've watched or read where they actually really and truly kill off a main character in a meaningful way, and how the characters carry on and deal with the grief and grow past it is focal to the story; but I would say that it is a delightful exception, rather than the rule.

Siebass: I saw the below liner notes from Guatecoop on his song "malaise", so I took a listen, and though it was great. Worked up some lyric, vocal, and video, then passed it back to him. Went with the theme of disconnection, and that evolved into the metaphor of the missing heart in the song. Someone once described my vocals as "careening". I think I leaned into that here. Really happy with how this turned out.

guatecoop: This is a song that I wrote for the video collab, but it never materialized. I tried to write something really easy to go along with but maybe it wasn't. I had pretty much given up on the video collab challenge, which would have been the first time of not completing the challenge since it was started 3 years ago--UNTIL @siebass got ahold of me suggesting that we just move forward with it together! I was really grateful and flattered....and then, he sends me his vocals with video and it was really great. So, I had basically completed the music but only with video for the guitar, as others were going to play other instruments and have their own videos. Well, I had to get those done, so I did a new drum track and did a video for the bass—and my 10 year old son filmed it. The laptop that has OpenShot on it is very old and SLOW, so I aligned the videos the best that I could. It turned out pretty well, but the song is brought up to a new level with the vocals from @siebass.
I banged out some drums and put my 60s Tiesco bass on it. The guitar is my Agile Harm through a Vox AC15.
