In Summer 2005, after 2+ years feverish studying, dissecting and messing with Ableton Live ... I was finally finishing (or pretty much near so) some tracks worth hearing. 

At the same time I was blown away by it's power for DJ mixing sets. Editing tracks for perfect mixes and sequences ... mashups with samples all in one set ... so much cool stuff!

This set was the result. My first one. Has my DEVO remix (my first one) as track two, and an (unfinished or mastered) original track 'All Dream' (my first one) closing it out. 

Raw. So over maximized its actually scratchy in parts. Balls to the wall all the way. But I handed it out on CD - uploaded to Soundcloud and forums like AbletonLiveDJ - and some people that really liked it help me start a career in music.  🙏🏻

Satisfaction (DJ Set 2005)

Did this one back in 2015 and - having no Soundcloud Pro account at the time - never got around to publishing it anywhere. 

So it's been sitting on my drive until now, almost a decade (😳) later.

Intro is a quarter spinning on a table and falling over that looped and reversed Pink Floyd-Money sample .... then, dubby Jay Z (from *his* track 'Money') floating over track 01.

It's 'HARDSILVER' shining cause I feel like it ended up with shiny metal sounds shimmering all over it (not just the intro) and the hardcore hypnotic old west galloping techno grooves.

No idea how I found the cool dinosaur track coming @ 24:30. Glad I did! 🔥  looove tracks with big, phat dinosaur sounds 😆

One Aire Coastale (DJ Set 2012)

From 2000 to 2005 I spent a lot of time on Manhattan / Brooklyn based dance music forum Naughtybooth.  And a more wretched hive of Limelight, Tunnel and Twilo DJ's, producers and clubbers will never be found.

That town has long had its own hard, gritty underground house sound and  they were all about it. Place was a goldmine for sick tracks. Over that period I flew up there a few times to hang out with them.

In 2012 I was living back in New York. And I must have been reflecting on all that when I began piecing this one together, 'cause when I finished and listened back it was one of my most elaborately themed sets:

City street sounds intro ... subways ... NY samples all over it. These tracks are all New York bangers layered with tons of edits and sample work 🎧  

Labor of love, it was.

You're going the distance. Black coffee, cigarette hanging out the corner of your mouth.  And the miles wind on ... and on ... and ...

Blue Wide Miles (DJ Set 2012)

This Happened: On the eve of Xmas 2010, I boarded the northern train from Portland OR to Rochester NY with a laptop, a cheap little USB controller and a pair of PC speakers. Unsuspecting.

Who could know, that the first few tiny flakes falling before departure would evolve ... in transit - to a monstrous, unrelenting blizzard that would stop the Empire Builder 'overnight express' in its snowy, blowy tracks 5 times.

And along the way I mixed this set live for a car of weary travelers. 

I wonder now when it dawned on us that we honestly weren't 100% if we would ever reach our destinations? 

Was it before or after after Minneapolis? Where we backed up 2 miles to reroute around a landslide ahead. Or was it when Homeland Security (yes, DHS) stopped and inspected the train for 5 hours ... because the engine caught fire 🔥 😳 

😂 You have no idea. No, we really couldn't know. 😐

I chose a nice group of tracks in the days leading up to departure, I suppose influenced by the Portland winter cold. Then I played them on the train, mixed around on headphones hour after hour, scanning for magic where the tracks mixed. 

Until a curious girl approached and tapped me, wondering what's up. So, when I was ready, I turned the speakers on and played this for them.

And it must have been some subconscious thing rising, compelling me to choose the final track sequence you hear.  Because when I listen back years later:

 I can *hear* the storm building, from the first chords of haunting housey intro (Minilogue? 🤔) ... through the rise to the furious peak  ... then riding it out during the final miles home as the snow faded,  the train landed .... and we could finally sleep.

Yeah. That happened. lol.

Snow Day (DJ Set 2010)

The deep, deep early sasha-digweed era vibe on this is by design: 6 of 18 tracks are epic legends from 2000-2005.  A sound and feeling ... hit so hard ...

Its a tribute to sets we heard over and over,  soaking up every sound.  And wondering what manner of wizardry conjured such magic. Then, the long road learning how. 

So - for me - this is the vibe that led to a dance music career.  Body and soul.

As the deadline to submit that version approached, I ran out of time to do it justice - of note, the final 15 minutes - which features 3 of my all time favs remastered ('smak' mastered), edited, re-sequenced and layered (shuffle mixed)over two modern minimal techno tracks.

Here 'enhanced' means I finished it up the way I heard it in my head. Adds samples from the 'The Realm' acapella, a smoother feel and flow with refined engineering overall.

The deep, deep early sasha-digweed vibe on this one is no accident: 6 of 18 tracks are legendary classics from the 2000-2005 era. 

A sound so impactful, it compelled me to start producing and DJing and everything I've done in dance music since. 

Here I freshened it up by blending them in with newer tracks, feverishly layering & chopping the last 15 minutes to hear them in a new context, and slowing it all down from the 126-130 bpm hyperspeed freight train so trendy at the time.

Of 60+ sets I recorded 2005 to date, this might be my fav. It's also the last ever mixed down on my custom touchscreen Live rig ...

Winter 2009: Booked to play Friday night @ Crooked Bayou, downtown Orlando. So I messed with some tracks. Came up with a plan something like this. 

Alas!... a power inversion in the wiring of the house we were renting wiped out my studio PC and main music drive. Samples, productions and client work in progress ... BOOM 💥 Years of laborious love.  90%+ dusted.

Nuked my career in music at the time it did. Dark days, they were. My studio was toast. Had to hustle to find work and dig out.

My laptop and live rig were unplugged and therefore protected from disaster. Awesome!  but: had to cancel the gig for a new job anyway. 

So I remember playing through these tracks, practicing it on my touchscreen setup, solo at home.  The live edits and looping ... non-linear mixing ... the entire set harmonically orchestrated.  In the flow, yo.  

For years I worked to capture the 'just right' progressive techno sound. Driven to manifest a vibe and groove conforming to an archetype wired in my head. 

Stripped down turbo charged technocolor, cinemamatic vistas. 

Paramental.

I've done lots of sets since that I like. But at the time, this was the one that  *finally* told the storyexactly the way I was itching to tell it all that time.

And I did it one long night, right after my world turned upside down.  Unforgettable.

No accident. (DJ Set 2009)

Laid down this collection of slinky, sexy deep tech tracks one sunny afternoon @ Ernie & Jimbo's pool party - Orlando, Summer 2013. 

I was living in upstate NY at the time. One fine day my friend Mish invited me to her wedding back in FL. Could not miss! had to fly. 

So I hopped a plane with a little touchscreen laptop, A&H audio interface, USB controller and about 50 tracks of this type to choose from. 

I recorded to the Ableton grid as I played. Flew back north, fine tuned things a bit, engineered it and posted to SoundCloud (this is a repost).

Oh ... and that intro? It's an inside joke. I was a *horrible* smoker back in the day. I used to wake up with a hack like that. 🙄 (quit about 15 years back)

I pieced it together from open source samples* sprinkled with bits from Groundhog Day and Black Sabbath.

(* yeah so, no: that's not actually me 😆 Thank God!)

A Shrine of Reeds (DJ Set 2013)

I've helped clients around the world with Ableton Live services.

Friends and peeps I have done work for include Brian Transeau (BT), Bill Hamel, John Graham, Alexander 'Sasha' Coe's Involved (charity benefit tour), Danny Howells, Nick Warren, AK1200, and others.

Starting in 2005 I produced some tracks, put a few records out. I was also low-key obsessed with the DJ set as art form, using Live as a tool to harmonize, restructure and re-edit tracks together in realtime ie. non-linear mixing or 'shuffle mixing'.

At one point I developed a custom 17 inch touchscreen + hardware controller setup to do it live on stage and in the studio. Played gigs around Orlando and Central Florida for a bit.

On my sets mixes are harmonized and tracks deconstructed / reconstructed in new sequences by skipping back and forward through the waveforms. I prepare samples to drop throughout.

After mixing I do post-production, fine tune the samples and/or produce additional parts to fit. Then I master the output to make it pump and shine.

I've chilled on it in recent years other than the sets. But people ask me what I've been up to and want me to keep it coming. 

I'm still obsessed with the art of the DJ set. So here they are.
