Club Kong is six remixes that sounds like an electronic jungle jazz club, with production by halc and Dj CUTMAN. 

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Donkey Kong Country's release. Receiving high praise from gamers and critics alike, Donkey Kong Country became the second-best selling Super Nintendo game of all time. It spawned several popular sequels for Super Nintendo and was revived for the Wii in 2010 as Donkey Kong Country Returns. 

The original Donkey Kong Country soundtrack, written by beloved video game composer David Wise, was released under the title DK Jamz. Described as atmospheric "jungle music", the soundtrack features a wide range of musical styles blended with natural environmental sounds. Club Kong works popular melodies from the Donkey Kong Country series into a modern jazz fusion arrangement. Like stepping into electronic Donkey Kong jazz club, this artistic re-imagination will captivate gamers and electronic music fans alike. 

Club Kong brings together a powerhouse team of talent from the video game music scene. The album is produced by Drew Wheeler, also known as Halc. Halc is best known for his work with OverClocked Remix, contributing to thirteen albums since 2007. He is also the founder of 9-bit Records, a label that combines 8-bit sounds and modern electronic production. Club Kong is Halc's second album with GameChops. The album is introduced by popular youtube comedian Brentalfloss, and the album is mastered by video game remixer and founder of GameChops, Dj CUTMAN. 

The album is timely given the upcoming release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the fifth installment in the Donkey Kong Country series. Club Kong is sure to generate excitement for the upcoming game in old fans and newcomers to the series. Tropical Freeze will be available for WiiU in on February 21st.

08 Hymn of Valor [Red Omen]

Upheaval

Occasionally, I'll think of an old track from my scene days that had a good idea, but the execution was just too sloppy for the song to work. This song is the most glaring example; the drums were stuttery and un-groovy, the "zomg jazzy" chords just didn't work, and the song was WAY too repetitive.

As usual, the mindset for me is "if I made this song today, how would I do it?" Well, nailing the groove was top priority, so I cleaned up the kick rhythm to the point where the bass could carry the heavy load. I briefly considered re-doing the brass with proper samples, but that is A) time-consuming and B) kinda ignores the tracker roots of the song. So I whipped up a "brass-like" patch in Harmor that worked quite well. Gotta love them swells =)

Finally, it was just a case of listening to the song over and over until one part stuck out to me as annoying, and trying to read that "allergic reaction" and make something that fit. So the post-solo jam part was born, and I think it adds the perfect apogee moment that justifies a six-minute track.

One note on the jazzy chord progressions: I have ABSOLUTELY no idea what I'm doing. In fact, I don't even know what chords they are, I just stack shit up until it sounds like jazz. This, I feel, is at the core of how this song was written back in 1995.

For those who don't keep up with the (incredibly fractured and name change-y) worldbuilding I've been doing for it over the past several years, the Tsu'ghui are strange cloned monsters that are used by a shady organization to perform assassinations. They have ties to the wars that almost destroyed the galaxy before, but not in the ways you might think. The main character of HardSpeed, Capel, is one of these, or rather, was.
Anyway, they have a big spooky mothership, and this is its theme.

The Tsu'ghui are a strange group of space monsters that perform assassinations all over Earth Federation Space. They're very slippery, and none have ever been captured. It's unclear who is pulling the strings, frustratingly for the AFP. 
Two Tsu'gui units, 03 and 04 are slowly beginning to become self aware. When 04 begins to develop a concept of death and begins to understand love, it may just try to escape its shadowy masters with 03 -- any way it can.

Josh Mancell is a Los Angeles-based composer. He has created music for multi-million unit selling video game franchises (Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter), Emmy award-winning television (Clifford the Big Red Dog), festival-acclaimed independent films (The Wake of Light, Love Comes to the Executioner, A Star for Rose, Eat the Sun, etc) and a diverse array of commercials (including Target, McDonalds, EA Games and AT&T), logos and other visual media. Josh is also involved with several bands as both a performer and a producer (Exploding Flowers, Vagrant Winter, Fun Time Objects) and has guest lectured/panel-participated at American Film Institute, Berklee College of Music, Sarah Lawrence College, UC Irvine, Cal Poly Pomona and LA College of Music College.
