Around 1989, what were the promises of techno and its fictions? How are they significant today? And to whom?

This episode is led by DeForrest Brown, Jr., author of Assembling a Black Counter Culture, in conversation with Steve Goodman (a.k.a. Kode9, founder of Hyperdub) and Nkisi (co-founder of Non Worldwide). Collectively they discuss the migration of techno music from North America to Europe with an initial focus on the situated contexts of the dance music scene in London and across the U.K. during the early 1990s. With reference to techno’s spiritual and technological origins, evolution and relationship with the so-called Hardcore Continuum.

SMUT Press is delighted to present TTRRAACCAA for our 30th mix in the Sounds of SMUT mix series. TTRRAACCAA is an Andalusian producer, singer and DJ based in Barcelona. In 2020, he self- published his first LP “Depressed 24/7 but always down to party” and in 2022 the second arrived: “Party Monster,” through the Granada label Mareo.  Known for his adventurous and risk-taking sets, he envisions them as an exciting journey full of surprises through eras, styles, spaces and textures that fuse old-school classics with pop edits and mashups from the internet, all drawing from a wide range of musical influences including PC music, house music and reggaeton. His SoundCloud profile captures this wide array of sounds through his smash edits and mashups that during the last year have toured the four corners of Spain and beyond, where he fuses mainstream pop vocals or pop culture moments from TV and movies and transforms them into club bangers. El ambient siempre ha sido un género con el que conecto desde un lugar más íntimo, una pausa necesaria frente al desborde de emociones y pensamientos. No sé si es casualidad que este mix haya llegado en un momento crucial y de cambios en mi vida; se vuelve en tanto un proceso natural traducirlo en música, casi como un diálogo interno que genera calma y narra lo que ahora experimento. Traducir lo que no siempre sé expresar en palabras y compartirlo de una forma genuina. Un mix cargado quizá, de atmósferas y texturas tensionantes, pero a su vez tan digno de ser ignorado.
