As Sivan begins, we circle the base of the mountain, preparing to receive Torah at Sinai. This nigun by Ben Dreyfus, Rosh Chodesh Sivan, beautifully embodies the journey from preparation to revelation. It’s got three parts–– learn them all here!

One of the most well-known of the kinot, liturgical poems for Tisha b'Av, Eli Tsiyon is an alphabetical acrostic describing the destruction of Jerusalem. It is the last piyut in the Ashkenazi collection of kinot and is customarily sung in a recitative style by the whole community. In this kina, the poet likens Jerusalem to a woman who has suffered both destructive and redemptive pain: the pain of a young widow, and the pain of a mother who brings new life into the world. Taken as a whole, the poem is a mournful call out to Zion to lament her tragic destruction. Only in the last verses do we come to understand that this kina is also a call to G!d to hear the Jewish people’s cry. To conjure this mournful
call, the poet opens every stanza with alei and ends with ha, the the sounds of howling, weeping and sighing.(description modified from Piyut North America)

Niggun Ha'Tnu'ah

Nigun (a wordless melody from the Jewish tradition) written on the banks of the Washougal River in so-called Washington state. Ancestral lands of the Cowlitz tribe and Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. From what I can tell, "Washougal" is a Native word meaning "rushing waters". If you have any other information about the original stewards of this land and river, please let me know!
