Imagine being stranded on a highway past midnight on a cold night in late December. This is a modern Christmas carol with a country/folk/bluegrass sound with a melody that is equal parts King Henry (an English traditional song) and Johnny Cash. Please excuse the quick-and-dirty production values.

A cover of the Kennedys'  classic Life is Large off the album of the same name. The song and the album alike saw me through adolescence, and my band, the King's Busketeers decided that we'd add it to the set list of a recent show. This is our first real run of the song, recorded on our bodhran player's porch.

This is one of those songs that just fell into my brain from who-knows-where. I wrote out the lyrics, and did most of the composing and arranging during recording, so this is super rough, but hopefully enjoyable. 

Hermetic Superheroes -- Super Rough Cut

This song is dedicated to a fellow busker and friend of mine, the Skald of Northampton, Jesse the Harper. The words are original, the melody is stolen from a traditional song called "Reynardine."

Running off to Gretna Green to get married was, for many English couples in the Georgian period, the equivalent of eloping to Las Vegas, and many matches made that way were about as stable as those made in Las Vegas. Marriages in Scotland just needed an exchange of vows before witnesses, so it was also an opportunity for lovers divided by class or abusive households to escape. 

The melody is equal parts Shenandoah and a major-key version of The Royal Oak.

Remember that wonderful country song in the middle of Disney's Robin Hood? I've updated it for modern times. After all, we may not have a scurvy knave of a Prince to worry about, but we've got someone just as ripe for a wee bit of mockery. You know who I mean.

Anarchy in the USA

Ripped from the history books and set to an old folk tune, this is an ordinary man's account of the 1381 peasant's revolt, an event that shook the English medieval world to its foundations. The name of the song is a medieval euphemism for the average peasant, and later was the title of a Tudor-era play that lampooned the rebels as brain-dead yokels. Wish You Were Here

Inspired by my Great-Great-Great Aunt Mary Nolan Gleason of Marcellus Falls, NY. She lived above the bar that became an ice cream parlor and speakeasy during the 1920s. By all accounts she was a smashing woman, spirited yet classy - she even ate her morning grapefruit topped with a cherry. Her glassware from the ice cream shop is still in the family, and my folks now keep their liquor in the same pine cabinet.
