'Beginning' is the opening section of a thirty-minute piece performed in Stephanuskirche, Berlin, Germany on the 24th April 2014. The church provided a huge, inspirationally resonant acoustic space for the duo’s early encounter. The piece begins with Hilary Jeffery’s trombone sounding long, sonorous tones and when Simon Rose’s baritone saxophone joins it is not through mimeses but by the juxtaposition of fast, percussive tonguing that ricochets around the churches interior. From the outset the unusual musical discourse develops in concert with the church’s architecture that proves as important to the music’s composition as the choice of instruments (Oliveros, 2005). As Beginning unfolds the players separate, moving to opposite sides of the church, exaggerating the already huge resonance through call and response. Continuing they encircle the audience, joining at the back of the church to return via the aisle, arriving at the front of the altar where Hilary Jeffery continues to climb stairs leading to the pulpit, initiating a trombone led dénouement that completes the half-hour piece.

Joshua Weitzel is a guitarist and shamisen player from Kassel, Germany, currently based in Kyoto, Japan. 
His work is work is based on deep exploration of dynamics and contrasting parameters such as stasis and progress, linear and spatial development, control and unexpectedness. He has worked with a number of internationally recognised artists, among them improvisers, composers, noise musicians, fine artists, filmmakers, dancers, poets and Jazz musicians and has performed on various occasions across Europe, Israel and Japan. 
From 2015-2016 Joshua organised the Chamäleon Concerts at Lolita Bar in Kassel, a monthly series for experimental music that is still ongoing.

Trois Chapeaux 為由加州舊金山為基地的 Tania Chen（鋼琴、電子）、Jaroba（木管樂器、電子）、Kevin Corcoran（打擊）和 Jorge Bachmann（電子）組成的電子原音四重奏。他們的聲音跨足粗礦質地噪音，到細微片段旋律，與厚重的延續音場。

他們的即興表演包含影像、因地創作、舞蹈肢體或結合共同興趣藝術家創作。Trois Chapeaux在他們的作品中尋找一種充滿突出的能量，然而對突發轉變與環境中的聲響卻也是保持敏銳的集體聲音。

An electroacoustic quartet of Tania Chen (piano, electronics), Jaroba (reeds, electron-
ics), Kevin Corcoran (percussion) and Jorge Bachmann (electronics) based in San Fran-
cisco, California, the Trois Chapeaux sound spans gritty, textural noise to subtle phrases of melody and deep layers of drone.

Their improvised performances have included video, site-specific work, choreographed movement and collaborations with kindred artists. Trois Chapeaux seek a collective sound in their work that is bristling with energy yet sensitive to their own sudden changes and the ambient sounds of their surroundings.

ABOUT THE ALBUM

In February 2020, Massimo Magee, Joshua Weitzel, and Tim Green met for a short tour in Germany. These recordings are from the beautiful ambiance of Villa Plagwitz in Leipzig, their three voices combining in two pieces of purely improvised communication across a broad sound-world, naturally and freely flowing through the full gamut of musical expression on their instruments. Magee and Weitzel have worked together in various projects since meeting in London in 2015; their investigations covering an area from conceptual music and electroacoustic improvisation to free jazz. Green and Magee share a long history of musical exploration together since 2009, running the spectrum from minimalist electroacoustic improvisation to full-throated fire music. This diversity of interests came to full flowering on this evening in Leipzig, entwining in a spontaneous celebration of pure multifaceted possibility.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
Originally formed in 2013 in Brisbane, the Cyclone Trio is Massimo Magee and Tony Irving, whose “Vitriol & The Third Oraculum” (577 Records, 2020) was warmly received earlier this year, with the addition of Tim Green. In what was incidentally the last gig at London’s Cafe Oto before the Covid-19 lockdown, and the group's second-ever show, this intensely focused performance foreshadowed the cataclysm that would soon arrive on the global horizon. Convening specifically for this intercontinental performance, Tim Green during a European tour, Massimo Magee from his home in London and Tony Irving on a curtailed trip from Australia, all three musicians brought their own electrifying energy to a piece that borders on cacophony in an unrelenting landscape of colliding percussion and towering saxophone. Their record aptly expresses the singularly titled Conflict they were attempting to convey—whether anticipating the year to come, or reacting to the world around them, it remains a project with a profound and liberating sound for this historical moment.
