This month marks the 25th anniversary of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's second (and final) full-length LP, 'The Main Ingredient.' Following in the footsteps of 1992's 'Mecca and the Soul Brother,' the album comprises tracks built from densely layered samples, frequently previously unsampled jazz fusion cuts mixed with crisp drums and short vocal snippets plundered from well-known '80s/'90s hip-hop tracks. Use of a number of go-to tracks defines the sound of the album and the presence of vocal samples from Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane in particular is a key ingredient in the album's sonic palette. In celebration of the album's 25th year, we've partnered once again with WhoSampled to present this mixtape of album tracks, alt versions, interview snippets, and of course original sample material, mixed by Chris Read.

Flow-er is an artist based in Besançon, France. He creates music that blurs the lines between Neo-Soul, House, Acid Jazz, Hip-Hop, and so much more. Inspired by artists as diverse as Flying Lotus, Dam-Funk, and the pure sound of analog synths, Flow-er is all about building huge textures and lush soundscapes with his music.
Recently, he announced the release of a brand new EP, Hanging Garden, which will be published on the 20th of March, 2020.
The first thing that you might notice about the EP is certainly the artist’s remarkable capability to endow his work with personality and energy, and the flow of this release is absolutely groundbreaking. On the songs, each melodic line cuts through the mix, not only in terms of sound, but also in terms of meaning and attitude. The production feels personal and relatable, and it is refreshingly far removed from the usual cliches of the genre. The sound of the instrumentals is also really great, with beats that are sonically balanced, offering a unique blend of next-level power and groundbreaking detail.
