They discuss the ongoing genocide in Occupied Palestine and the parallels to what occurs here in the Central Valley to marginalized communities, as well as the outlook for the coming year considering the incoming Trump administration amidst a wave of support for Palestinian justice worldwide and locally.

Today Josh Shurley speaks with Dr. Jim Rine of the Climate Crisis & Militarism Project (of Veterans For Peace) about an often-overlooked driver of global warming: militarism. Dr. Rine explains how armed forces and warfighting infrastructures are massive, largely unreported sources of greenhouse-gas emissions; how defense spending and military priorities divert trillions away from climate mitigation and human needs; and how geopolitical strategies frequently protect fossil-fuel interests rather than confronting fossil dependence. The conversation connects local impacts (jet pollution, community health, and the costs of militarized parades and airshows) with global consequences, and it outlines concrete steps students, activists, and communities can take. The episode closes with a call to join Veterans For Peace’s “Wake Up to the Climate Crisis” tour, including a screening of Earth’s Greatest Enemy at Fresno City College on Thursday, October 16.

On this episode of Stir It Up, Josh was joined by Nora Zaragoza-Yanez. from Faith in the Valley, where she leads the Valley Watch Network—a rapid-response effort tracking and supporting families impacted by immigration raids, detentions, and forced disappearances across the Central Valley. We discussed the human realities behind these increasingly secretive enforcement tactics, the toll they take on families and communities, and the urgent need for trustworthy information and legal support for those targeted. The discussion focused on how migrant justice intersects with broader struggles for civil liberties, student rights, and community safety, and why defending our neighbors today is central to defending democracy itself. It was a powerful conversation on solidarity, dignity, and what it means to resist dehumanization in our own backyard.
