My friend and musical colleague The Panpsychist (Cody Richards) sent me an instrumental track he had started working on. I was so inspired by it that I stayed up all night writing and recording vocals for it. Here's what it sounds like in its current state. The drummer from motae will be joining us on this piece and laying drums for it soon as well.


Sick Game (The Panpsychist ft. Joshua Du Chene) [Work in Progress]

The intro track to my non-existent 8-bit video game, Dark Space.* I wanted to experiment with creating a dark, spacey chiptune that would fit as the theme of a futuristic, outer-space action game, such as Metroid, and this is what I came up with. I'll continue recording more chiptunes with different themes, so keep your ears peeled!

Dark Space Intro [8-bit NES-Style Chiptune]

I wanted to create something with a fun and upbeat drive that was reminiscent of 8-bit platformers, so I repeated a single riff that cycles in sets of six so that it never feels like it ever completely finishes. To keep it interesting, I varied the drums for each cycle, switching to half-time at the mid-point and incorporating a few full-time sections during the second half. I also wrote the lead line so that it revolves around a core theme, but varies between three different riffs with a couple points of minor embellishments.

Upbeat Platformer Adventure Jam [8-Bit NES-Style Chiptune]

Dark Secret was written in a style reminiscent of NES fantasy/RPG games. I imagined this song could be used as the theme to a game of this style, or possibly as an underworld theme.

Dark Secret RPG Theme Song [8-Bit NES-Style Chiptune]

I really enjoyed composing this experimental, somber, and somewhat spooky chiptune. Images of carnivals, castles, and calliopes were drivers for much of the melody. And the beats are the result of an enjoyable exploration into syncopated, bombastic rhythms.

Bro Hug! [Comedy]

In learning how to create more dubstep style sounds using FL Studio, I used some concepts that I've heard in some Skrillex songs and tried to recreate my own similar sounds. I learned a bit about using an envelope filter on the high pitched wub sound to vary the tempo of the wubbing... if that makes any sense. And I also played with the WOW plugin, which creates the big vowel sounds that sound like a robot vomiting.

My mother always jokes that I got my musical talent from her because she taught me how to play the Batman theme song on the guitar when I was a kid. But whether that's what inspired me to become a musician isn't what matters - the support I was given to do what I wanted to do, regardless of the practicality of my endeavors, is what allowed me to pursue this creative life. So, since it's my mom's birthday today, I thought I'd customize the Batman song she taught me so many years ago as a gift back to her. Happy birthday, mom!

I've recently begun researching music licensing and the types of songs that are popular right now. In an attempt to mimic some of the popular styles I've heard, I wrote this little tune as a test run. I'll have to re-record the whole thing before I send it to any licensing agencies, but I had fun working up the general idea. Could you imagine this in the background of some commercial?

I've been a bit hooked on this recent guitar idea I came up with, so I've continued adding to it. I started writing this riff to go over the djenty riff I posted yesterday, but after adding some delay and lfo phasing to it, I like how it stands alone.

Skinwalker's CED #181 (06.30.2013) - A Guitar Riff - Again - Delay Riff

As my interest in licensing music has been growing, I've been trying to create a variety of ideas that seem fitting for different types of placements. I could imagine this riff growing into something bigger with some strings in the background and maybe a slowly building rhythm behind it. I picture it going over some inspirational commercial that starts with a montage of individual people staring off camera through a window as rain comes down outside, followed by the inspirational voice-over and the imagery slowly changing to happier people eventually all running through fields in the sun. And of course, it would be advertising something like an oil company.

Skinwalker's CED #183 (07.02.2013) - Light Acoustic Riff

Elaborating on the riff I posted yesterday, I developed a melodic strumming melody. While mixing the track, however, I had some weird issues with the playback, mostly consisting of mild pumping between the L and R channels. I cut the compressors completely out, but the problem still persisted - hopefully, it's just something with Windows and audio drivers that will be cured with a restart.
