In 2001 I sat down to interview poet Robert Creeley ahead of a performance at the Knitting Factory in New York City. We spoke about a lot of things, but the conversation kept coming back to jazz music and how it relates to poetry. Creeley was one of the longest surviving poets from the Beat Generation. He passed away in 2005, but this interview offers a glimpse into how he viewed his role as a writer. The finished interview aired on the "Society of Underground Poets (SoUP) Radio hosted by Troy Teegarden and produced at WRVG-World Radio.

2001 Interview with poet Robert Creeley

Paul Gilroy completed his PhD at the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in 1986. He worked on race and culture, co-authored The Empire Strikes Back: Race and Racism in 1970s Britain (1982) during his time there, and subsequently published There Ain't no Black in the Union Jack (1987) based on his thesis. He is currently Professor of American and English Literature at King's College London.
