Trapped

There is a bell ringing. It must be a new day. A direct representation of time does not exist in here. For all I know it could be a new month or a new year. This place is guided by a series of noises and one sided interactions. Most of the time I try to go unnoticed but it never seems to work. They know my every move.

I suppose that I should be thankful for my cell. I have made peace with the spider that lives in the corner. I think that in time we will become good friends. He is not much for conversation these days. There is a light in the room that provides no warmth. I often wonder if someone is watching on the other side. It’s probably a brainwashing tool. Does the spider know?

What is this? Soft melody, strong rhythm, it might be music! This could mean one of two things. Either it’s feeding time or they are trying to finish the job the light has been working on with some kind of aural torture. I think I hear the ungreased wheels of the food cart chirping through the hall. My preoccupation with the light and the distraction from the music prevent me from acquiring my meal.

The Music has stopped. Now it’s just me and the light. Like a moth to a flame I am drawn in. The world around me, what’s left of it, slips away. We are one. The more I resist the harder it is to fight. My eyes are beginning to burn and a bead of sweat is running along the right side of my temple. This mixture of dread and obsession is driving me insane. Am I being punished for something? Is this place some kind of sick joke? When will I be released? I acquiesce as move of self-preservation. 

There is a knock at the door. I’m not sure who it is or what they want. They could be here to grant my freedom or my execution, I would accept either at this point. A moment of joy comes as I am taken away from what lies in front of me, but quickly leaves as the dark figure enters. He enters swiftly but without emotion. As he emptily looks at me the light reflects off of his glasses, hiding the windows to a soul, if there is one.

I scramble for the most appeasing thing to say, but I can only get out a halfhearted “Can I help you sir?”

“We have fallen behind schedule and I am going to need you come in this weekend.” He says as he took note of his surroundings. “Oh and get a plant or something your cubicle looks like a prison cell.”
