Daybreakers

A few months ago, I found out that I am actually over a quarter Native American. For me and my family, this was very exciting, given my past passion for learning about their history, culture, and spirituality.
So I was inspired to write this piece about my experiences, studying this culture, specifically about my high school trip in the southwest region. During this trip, I was able to spend time with several people from the Navajo and Mohawk tribes, which was a very profound experience for me. Featuring the Navajo flute and buffalo drum, this song is very personal, and I hope you enjoy!

We're Still Alive

This is the first native-themed tune that I wrote, inspired by several events, including a spiritual experience while hiking through Canyon De Chelly. Recently re-recorded, I'm very proud of this piece, and I hope you enjoy! More Native Soul to come!

Josiah Contreras is a bassist, songwriter and producer from Denver, Colorado. He is a graduate from Berklee College of Music, where he studied with world-renowned musicians, such as Victor Wooten, Livingston Taylor, John Patitucci, and James Genus.

Josiah has played with multiple artists, including singer-songwriters, rock bands, cover bands, and funk/soul groups in Denver, Boston, and Spain, resulting in an extended repertoire, and versatile approaches to playing live and in the studio.

With Elk Song, he writes, plays, and produces his own original music, heavily inspired by his passion for social justice, as well as his home of Colorado. This combines modern groove-based styles, such as Rock, Soul, and Folk with elements of world music. The result is what he likes to call “Colorado Soul”
