Hellraiser from Helsinki… DJ Sofa is the perfect selector for the first ever 1 More Thing guestmix.

On the radar since I wrote a feature on Finnish drum & bass for Bandcamp in summer 2020, Sofa‘s take on jungle and foundation drum & bass flexes across some of the most important cornerstones of the sound from venomous breakbeat assaults to ludicrously gritty old Bristol flavours.

So far it’s been supported on labels ranging from native stables such as Straight Up Breakbeat, Midnight Sun and Bass = Win to UK imprints such as Natty Dub, Future Retro and Breaking Point DNB.

Plenty more releases are set to drop this year on labels such as Lobster Theramin, Myor and Equal People Records.

Let's meet our dj for episode 484, Basic Rhythm:
1. Tell us about upcoming releases you’re excited about on Raw Basics and Musique Nocturne.

The Revival EP is the last release on Raw Basics before I launch Musique Nocturne later this year. I am very excited about the new label as it will focus solely on forward looking D&B, and I have some great collaborations with some MCs, and producers Kid Drama, J Kenzo and others in the world.

2. What is the best track you’ve produced?

Whichever tracks I am working on at the time. I am always most excited by the next thing, the new thing. Although, I am still quite pleased with the Dread 12” that came out on Raw Basics last year, and the Still EP on Sneaker Social.

3. Since you played on Pirate Radio in your younger years, share with us a funny or wild story about playing on Pirate Radio.

One of my fondest memories is of playing on Rude FM back in the day, alongside people like Fracture, Mark System etc, when we were based in a soon to be demolished tower block in Chingford. Just to get in there you had to hide your record bag under your coat or something and wait until the security at the ground floor were on their rounds. And then you would take the lift to the floors above or below the studio and walk to the correct floor. At the time the block was half empty, but there were some gangs in there and on the estate that you also had to avoid. Then when you were at the correct floor you would call the studio phone to get them to let you in, while waiting in the anterior hallway, when they opened the door you would just walk straight through into the flat, rather than waiting outside the door and possibly disturbing any of the remaining tenants on that floor.

On May 27th Curated by proudly presents the next curator in line; modern jungle stepper Coco Bryce! Coco’s infamous junglist productions involves typically minimalistic and groovy productions on labels such as Myor, Critical Recordings and Future Retro.

Coco Bryce carefully curated this line-up consisting of long time friends and fresh new talent. We are looking forward to host a b2b set with Sully. They played a legendary set together at the last edition of Dekmantel Festival. One of the foundations of the drum&bass and jungle scene, DJ Flight, will join them on the bill alongside Rotterdam based breakcore and jungle dj FFF and eclectic breaks talent Philo from Cologne. All sets will be vocally hosted by Dart.

Accelerating at a speed of 160 to 170 beats per minute, Nectax explores the nodal points between Drum & Bass, Jungle, and Footwork, injecting into his craft his acclaimed technical skill and clinical precision of production.

Credited by DJMag as one of the Newcastle scene’s frontrunners, the uncompromisingly forward-thinking producer and STEREO 45 co-founder has gained worthy support from legendary-status producers and burgeoning superstars alike; from 160 jungle stalwarts such as Sully to pioneers of the scene like LTJ Bukem.

With forthcoming releases on the revered Over/Shadow label, and others yet to be unveiled, the 25-year-old producer-DJ continues to push the future-focused ethos of junglism to its limits, drawing inspiration from both the centre and periphery zones of electronic music.

This mix is a timestamp of his mind frame currently; his ease of mixing together everything in the 160bpm realm and his love for a variety of styles is clearly audible, the rhythms typically might be different but there are a lot of other musical overlaps between Footwork & Jungle.
On display are a few forthcoming tracks of his, as well as some bits on his label Stereo 45, there are also a few Bandcamp hidden gems in there for good measure!
