Sound Metaphors (@sound-metaphors) is Nemo Ripoll and Castro Moore, but it is also the name of their famously well-curated label and record shop in Berlin. As such the pair has been helping to define the sound of the underground on many different fronts - electric DJ sets, cult events and even through the custom-made sound systems built for customers worldwide. With a vast musical knowledge between them and a never-ending supply of their own unreleased edits and DJ tools, they are able to tell musical stories that draw from all across all genres and many different eras.

That plays out in the superb mix they have put together for us this week. It's a full-bodied selection that shows off their love of contrasting styles - loose, percussive house music brushes up with deep and dubby cuts, dark acid grooves sit next to '80s synth sounds before a disco finish goes from stomping to funky. The exuberance of it all is infectious and leaves you wanting more.

Growing up in Munich, it was the environment of Berlin, and in particular the now defunct underground venue Griessmuehle, that shaped the early sound of Jo, then known as ioth. Influenced by local communities and the international music avant-garde, he shaped the sound that became the Jotel California trademark: Melting together trance, house, acid and electro into a bubbling cauldron of progressive energies. As a DJ, he's proved his mettle on countless club floors and DIY raves he's organised with friends outside Berlin. With releases on labels such as Klasse Wrecks, Inch by Inch and of course his own Warning crew, he quickly made a name for himself among musical connoisseurs and hungry ravers alike.

This months episode is dedicated to the awesome group of people behind a bar and cultural hub called Gelegenheiten Berlin. Besides the fact that these guys gave us the great opportunity to stream our extended christmas episode from there, they had their 12th anniversary these days. To share our love for the oldest non-profit & community-driven institution in the gentrified Neukölln area, we invited our friend and Gelegenheiten-member Ali Arbeit to speak about the project itself, the anniversary-fundraiser called Tiles at Fiese Remise and – of course – to bless us with a selection of his current favorites. Apart from his work for Gelegenheiten Ali also co-runs the freshly founded Label In City And In Forest which just dropped it’s first LP by Erik Jähalli a weeks days ago.
