Inner Ocean Records is pleased to present the latest release by Carsten Rubeling, one of Canada’s premier jazz composers and trombonists.  “Headwaters” was recorded with a seven-piece ensemble intended to transport the listener to an environment where rivers begin and true wilderness fills us with a sense of natural beauty and magic. A cinematic and mesmerizing experience, as the songs unfold they evoke a message of reverence for this remaining piece of pristine wilderness and a call for protection of these areas.  

Bighorn region is tucked along the eastern slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains between Banff and Jasper. The expansive scenery of this wilderness includes lush forested valleys, snow covered mountain ranges, jewel-like lakes and wildflower meadows.  The Bighorn area forms the headwaters of the North Saskatchewan River basin which flows across Canada to the Hudson’s Bay.  The area contains critical wildlife habitat for many animal populations including grizzly bear, caribou, bighorn sheep, and bull trout. 

This album was created in conjunction with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), and the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) and with support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA).

I wrote the piece "Smokestacks, Shorelines" during my Tokyo - Osaka bus trip last year. It's very inspired by the heavy coastal industries along the Japanese coast (like Hamamatsu and Nagoya)

It's from my 7 piece mini album Shiny Silver Lining that will appear next month.

"The main threads of Shiny Silver Lining are those things that come along the way that you didn’t envision in the first place. It’s a change of scenery, transitions, change of seasons, things that get lost, replacing the old veins by growing new arteries and paths, feeling lost in translation, feeling foreign in the familiarity. The color of transformation. It’s about finding positivity in things that get worn out and seeing the good things of dark brooding clouds and waves that are 100 feet high that keep on coming to crush you and all you can do is float."

The Hamburg-based producer is still ‘Lost in Yesterday’, a time when the world was still somewhat ‘normal’. The track is a very chill lo-fi joint filled with samples of saxophone and strings that give it a really mysterious nightly vibe. This piece is a perfect soundtrack to relax after a long day of working.
