These two reels, 'Journey by Train' and 'Golden Egg', were written by the fiddle-player Joe Liddy, who was from Killargue in County Leitrim. Alan Reid, the banjo player on this track, is from the same area. Hearing about Liddy from neighbours and musicians led Alan to finding two published Liddy tunebooks, The Leitrim Fiddler, vols 1 and 2, which contained these two tunes. 

This track is taken from the Leitrim Equation 3 CD. The Leitrim Equation is a music residency in Leitrim running since 2006. A key part of the project is to support emerging musicians in Leitrim. Dónal Lunny, John Carty and Séamus Begley were the resident musicians involved in the project this year. Previous resident musicians include the groups Dervish and Lúnasa. Toner Quinn speaks to renowned fiddle-player Kevin Burke about his music and recordings and his work with groups such as the Bothy Band and Celtic Fiddle Festival.

Through his work with traditional music groups such as the Bothy Band, Patrick Street, Open House and Celtic Fiddle Festival, his duo albums with the late singer and guitarist Mícheál Ó Domhnaill, and the solo albums If the Cap Fits, Up Close and In Concert, Kevin Burke has had a major influence on modern Irish fiddle-playing. In this interview, editor Toner Quinn asks Kevin about learning music in South London, moving to Ireland in the 1970s to play with Christy Moore, joining the Bothy Band, his work with Ó Domhnaill, Patrick Street and the Celtic Fiddle Festival, and his thoughts on teaching Irish traditional fiddle.

The traditional Irish group Dervish recently celebrated thirty years together and received a BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. Their most recent album is the Great Irish Songbook which features artists such as David Gray, the actor Brendan Gleeson, Andrea Corr and Rhiannon Giddens.

For this Journal of Music podcast, editor Toner Quinn spoke to singer Cathy Jordan about the early days of the group, the band’s recordings over the years including At the End of the Day and Travelling Show, the experience of performing at the Eurovision Song Contest and the impact that had on the band, the new album, writing her own songs and the importance of folk music.

'When the words don't work, visually I can explain what it is' – For this latest episode of the Journal of Music podcast, Toner Quinn speaks to music documentary film-maker Myles O'Reilly.

For the past decade, film-maker Myles O’Reilly has been documententing the Irish indie and folk music scenes, creating videos with Lisa Hannigan, Martin Hayes, Ye Vagabonds, Lisa O’Neill, Radie Peat from Lankum and more, and he also filmed the Christmas Eve busk on Grafton street with Glen Hansard, Bono and Sinead O’Connor.

Myles is a musician himself and toured and recorded under the name Juno Falls for many years before he turned to film making.
