Jeffries currently serves as Senior Vice President in the Enterprise Technology Strategic Services group within Truist Financial Corporation, formerly known as Suntrust.  He is responsible for designing the Technology workforce strategy for technology teammates and contingent workers.  Prior to this role, he’s held several leadership positions including leading technology governance practices and collateral management practices for the corporate investment bank.

Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Nicholas Sapp grew up in the city’s Cascade neighborhood. He graduated from the University of Chicago ( https://www.uchicago.edu/) with a major in Comparative Human Development. While on a leave of absence from his undergraduate studies, Nicholas’ interest in Student Affairs was sparked by the programming offered by Georgia State University’s Office of Black Student Achievement (https://engagement.gsu.edu/black-student-achievement/).

How to Prepare for Your Next Job Before You Need It

Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, Brian McLaughlin earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Business Administration from Boston University. He was also an Army major who commanded a paratrooper unit, served in Afghanistan in special operations, and later returned as the media production advisor to General Petraeus and produced documentary short films with an Afghan crew around Afghanistan.


Today, he is a producer and co-president of Emerald Elephant Entertainment where he’s produced four feature films – all acquired for distribution – and have eight in development. Two of his films are also on Amazon Prime Video. Brian is also on the PGA’s (via https://producersguild.org/) Education, Mentoring, and One Guild committees and recently completed a role for The Walt Disney Company as a program manager for health and safety. The Journey of a Middle School Social Studies Teacher: Meet David Yancey

Dr. Robyn L. Gobin is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. She is a nationally recognized expert on interpersonal trauma, women's mental health, and the cultural context of trauma recovery in the African American community.

Her latest book, "The Self-Care Prescription: Powerful Solutions to Manage Stress, Reduce Anxiety, and Enhance Well-Being" aims to change the narrative around mental health and self-care in communities of color and teach people how to incorporate self-care into their busy lives in a sustainable way. 

In addition to pointers on self-care, Dr. Gobin also shares a few points she's learned on her professional journey:

1. Attending summer programs in high school and college can be extremely helpful in helping students figure out what they want to study.

2. The difference between Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) and Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) programs. 

3. The importance of mentors. Dr. Gobin almost took a more costly route to getting her doctorate degree when a mentor advised her to reconsider.

4. The necessity of having self-awareness and knowing what works best for you. This will help you to know when to disregard or follow recommendations others make.

Alphonzo Cross has more than 25 years of experience that includes retail sales, commercial property management, food & beverage management, and general project management. After moving to Atlanta from San Francisco in 2011, he co-founded The Boxcar Grocer with his sister, Alison Cross.  The Boxcar Grocer was a corner market that sold quality food products and flourished for over 3 years before closing its doors in 2015.

The following year, Alphonzo launched Quintessential, a brand development company that concepts, brands, and executes integrated boutique hospitality experiences. In 2017, he hosted the 5-part speaker series titled, “Hospitality & Retail in the New Atlanta” before launching Quintessential’s first brand, Parlor, in 2018.


Over the last decade, Alphonzo has helped redefine the landscape of one of Atlanta’s hottest areas, Castleberry Hill. He holds a communications degree from the University of Denver and a MFA from the Academy of Art University.

It’s been both the longest and shortest year ever, and we still have 4 more months left to go. I reflect on words of wisdom and inspiration by the late Chadwick Boseman and share how they serve as a light to us in the times we’re in.
