This is a BBC Radio 3 recording of a piece of mine performed on May 30 at Wigmore Hall by the Exaudi ensemble. 

I composed this piece when my grandparents were admitted to ICU with Covid-19. 'here, now' is dedicated to them, and reaches back to a piece of advice from my grandfather: be where you are, with all of your senses. This ‘life-philosophy’ encompasses the broad interest of my work, which is to unsettle the orthodox distinction between the senses.

'here, now' explores (1) the gradual progression from unsynchronised singing, to overlapping, to unification, and (2) how, through repetition, words can become imagistic rather than linguistic. 

Earlier this year, I read Virginia Woolf’s experimental novel The Waves, and it left a lasting impact on me. I decided to use text from the opening of this novel, which features the soliloquies of 6 individual characters who seem to be observing the same reality but perceive it in a completely unique way. What happens throughout the book, especially towards the end, is a process of ‘gradual coming together, running into one, acceleration and unification’―such that what begins as an expression of 6 separate inner lives becomes one consciousness. 

Something similar can be said for 'here, now'. The performers are part of a rocky landscape, each with their own incomplete map of reality that, by repetition, slowly arrives at something pure, austere and semantically satiated.

"Head into the mists with Joy as they explore the tale of The Selkie Wife with an hour of music inspired by these sea-dwelling shapeshifters. Accounts of people transforming into seals are found throughout Irish, Scottish and Scandinavian folklore, with the union between a selkie and a human being a common, yet tragic, narrative.

This is a real-time recording taken of forced rhubarb growing at David Westwood & Son rhubarb farm, near Wakefield. You can hear the rhubarb buds popping as they burst and also some mud as we squelched around in the dark. The audio has been cleaned up as much as possible to remove the sound of both the M62 and M1 motorways which are nearby!
