This is a collaboration between Tess Parks & Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre) which happened early in 2014 & the summer of 2014 in Berlin . As everyone hopefully knows about Anton Newcombe’s history we have decided to tell you more about Tess Parks.

A native of Toronto, Tess Parks moved to London, England at the age of seventeen where she briefly studied photography before dropping out and deciding to focus on music. Tess managed to make an impression on industry legend Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records, albeit the timing of their meeting could hardly have been less ideal; McGee was no longer involved in music and Tess was due to move back to Toronto. After moving back to her hometown in 2012, Tess formed a band on the advice of Alan McGee and less than a year after their meeting, he returned to music with his new label, 359 Music. Tess became one of his first six signings and released her debut record Blood Hot in November 2013 to excellent reviews. One reviewer described her as “Patti Smith on Quaaludes”. Others have mentioned her "gauzy psychedelic sound” and "smouldering voice”. Alan McGee himself said: “She’s only 24 and is already an amazing songwriter... she just doesn’t quite know she is yet … her most beautiful quality is her lack of ego. Tess is an amazing lady”.

In February 2014, she began recording with Brian Jonestown Massacre frontman Anton Newcombe in Berlin and they completed their new record 'I Declare Nothing' in autumn 2014. The record is due out later this year..

Part three of our Hand Cut Record Club and on to someone who we’ve been invigorated with ever since we heard the opening bars of Relapser - a riffing shoegaze pop masterpiece that perfectly juxtaposed huge sounding guitars with Oliver’s softly sung verses. It was hard to escape the song, everyone we knew and trusted were sharing the song. 

So we’re delighted to be welcoming O. Chapman to the fold with his new single Best Friend. Stepping up from the bedroom productions showcased on the Discomfort EP, the track was recorded with Theo Verney back in February and Oliver is also backed up by 2/3 of Our Girl. 

Featuring the same aspirin added wooze and swelling choruses that seems to have become the customary sound of the Brighton noisemakers, Best Friend is a song with a seemingly simple message but many levels to lose yourself in. Just as with Discomfort, the Kurt Vile’esque melodies remain as Oliver sings of the sort of friendship so strong, that you’d do anything for them - even if the other half does have their faults. 

As with previous Hand Cut singles, Best Friend will be released on lathe cut 7″ and limited to 25 copies. The 25 copies will be available from our shop here at 1pm today! We’ve already had an email from a girl threatening to bomb our office with cockroaches if she doesn’t get a copy so I’m imagining they’ll go pretty fast.

If you do miss out, don’t forget that we’re involved in Record Store Day this year and will be featuring on the Sensible Labels 12″ alongside heroes such as Alcopop, Big Scary Monsters and Howling Owl. We’ve got a new Best Friends track on there, I watched them play it last night and it’s a banger plus the record is only £10....I’ll stop with the hard sell now!

Rat Columns is the ever changing musical project of David West and friends. West is involved in other groups such as Rank/Xerox and Liberation, was a member of Total Control and Lace Curtain, and in recent years has released 2 eponymous solo LP's. Rat Columns emerged from the desert outpost of Perth, Western Australia in the late 2000s, influenced by largely anglocentric forms such as post-punk and jangle pop,  and has developed over time with an array of different friends from the USA and Australia, emitting a jet stream of 7”s, EPs and three full length albums along the way.

The third full length LP "Candle Power" was released in 2017, a mix of indie pop, post-punk and disco. The songs included on the "Sometimes We're Friends" EP were recorded at the same time as "Candle Power" in Guildford, Western Australia, in a back shed studio on a rambling riverside property. Beyond West, the Australian Rat Columns line-up of Perth underground luminaries, Amber Gempton, Louis Hooper and Chris Cobilis is featured, as well as musical wunderkind Cohen Bourgault guesting on violin. This recording sees Rat Columns dancing around classicist, German-influenced propulsive guitar pop on 'Sometimes We're Friends', an indie pop gossamer ballad involving an 'Astral Lover', and an unusual diversion into downer, vaguely Young-esque dirge rock on the cheery 'Waiting To Die'. This is the first Rat Columns release on the long-running, Bay Area-based Slumberland imprint.
