Joyce Muniz already has a story like no other. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, to a family rooted in shamanism and samba, she moved to Vienna in the 90s, becoming a vocalist when the city was a global centre for downtempo and starting her DJ career at Flex Club. In the 2000s she brought an authentic voice to the European baile funk explosion, touring with Major Lazer, and moved into production. She’s since collaborated with other distinct music makers, from Maya Jane Coles to DJ Hell, had a residency on Rinse FM, and released on labels including Get Physical, Permanent Vacation, Pets, International DJ Gigolo and Exploited, the latter of whom released her debut album, 2016’s ‘Made In Vienna’.
Her second album, ‘Zeitkapsel’, however, the German for ‘time capsule’, expands this further – incorporating what it means to be a queer woman in the best way Joyce knows: through her art.
Musically, it’s a roadmap of a life expressed through electronic music. With 80s synths meeting hip-hop beats, opener ‘These Days’ is a callback to Joyce’s days in Vienna, now filtered through over a decade honing her studio skills. ‘Joy Toy’ (her nickname) recalls the heady days of electro house, when camp fun was reclaiming the dancefloor. So does ‘Arrivederci Bella’ on which Joyce sings, reprising her early days rapping in Portuguese. The DJ Marky-approved d’n’b of ‘Bangalore Girl’ swims in the sounds and sights of her debut Indian tour, revisiting the music she was discovered MCing over. And closer ‘Tempelhof’ is an ode to Berlin, her current home, and the area that provided a city-wide oasis during lockdown, the track a spacey, Reese-driven vocodered chugger born from Joyce’s confluence of influences.
Her guest singers flesh out this growing identity. Meeting at an illicit dinner party of women during the second lockdown and bonding over a love of 90’s rap artist Bahamadia, multi-disciplinary US-born vocalist Leciel adds her distinctive flow to the moody ‘Grey Skies’. Roland Clark, meanwhile, voice behind seminal hits such as ‘I Get Deep’, provides a grand invocation of utopia over ‘Imagine’, Joyce building a dreamy house beat to add to the ethereal beauty.
‘The Rhythm Is Love’ delivers ex-Azari & III frontman Fritz Helder soulfully conveying movements of the heart over smokey piano. Play Paul, French touch hero, formerly of Buffalo Bunch and brother of Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel, turns the sensual electronic-funk of ‘How I Feel’ into a self-reflexive song about music, a modern hymn to its uplifting spiritual power. Queer activist Karl Michael evokes a hypnagogic fantasy world on the dark EBM of ‘In Der Nacht’. And Le3 bLACK, the young British MC proudly incorporating his heritage into his name, follows up his work with Hyperdub’s Loraine James with a scathing indictment of the political landscape on the Bristol trip-hop inspired ‘Never Brushing The Sound’.
Each vocalist delivers deeply personal sentiments, but amplified through the resonance of Joyce’s music they speak to a universal spirit connecting us all. The album’s artwork echoes this sense of something multidimensional and timeless. Designed by Joyce’s best friend, multi-hyphenate Raphael Gaiani, and realised by make-up artist Ken Krüger, creative director Mario Soldo and photographer Markus Morianz, it draws on abstract artists Dalí and Escher, but also the visionary realms Joyce’s shamanic grandfather explored.
‘Zeitkapsel’ is Joyce’s personal time capsule. Yet in telling her story, she points to an eternal place where all our collective hopes, desires and dreams come from.

Joyce Muniz returns to Exploited with a dark Italo slammer, produced alongside rising Mexican star, Theus Mago.
A beautifully slinky synth arpeggio bubbles away as a tight, lip-smacking beat builds and subtle robotic FX rub up against the groove. With no warning, a flurry of 8-bit melody cascades from the ether, playing haunting scales amidst a backdrop of cavernous reverb. Dramatic pads slice their way through the darkness, leading us towards a tense breakdown where pitched-up vocal cuts add a twisted flavour. The full assault of the 8-bit synths is felt at the drop, coming across like an intense video game battle sequence, with brooding sustained synth rasps swelling and pitch-bending for a final touch of intensity.

Joyce Muniz & Theus Mago’s feisty ‘Balin Bali’ Italo collaboration is a hot enough snack on its own, but with these two excellent new remixes it just got even tastier.

French producer and Jennifer Cardini collaborator Damon Jee steps up with an alternate Italo take on the original. The track builds slowly and with a moody edge as synths soar and snares hit hard over a chugging arpeggiated bassline, climaxing a dizzying breakdown which really gets the synapses firing. Slamming us back down into a sparse arrangement where that bassline rules all, the euphoria is snatched away from us suddenly in dramatic and very effective fashion.

Next up, Marvin & Guy up the tempo to a pacey house bounce and lay on some gentle electro textures. Shimmering stabs fizz atop a galloping beat as relentless bass waves undulate propulsively. The synths unfurl further in the breakdown before the time-stretched vocal announces the drop, where a heady crescendo awaits us. Synth flutes add a mystical edge next as the track steps back into a more hypnotic groove.

Even though Moderna & Joyce Muniz should already be a household name to most, let me give you some details on who you're dealing with here: 

Moderna's style is described as a dark heady blend of Dark Disco, Electro, Acid and Techno with wrought darkened vocals that has become her signature distinction. With her unique blend, she has got a contribution on The Matrix 4 Soundtrack by Tom Tykwer on Warner Brothers Records and her discography also includes three EPs with Mexican-based artist Theus Mago. Now residing in Berlin, the Los Angeles transplant gained momentum in Europe while working on new productions, touring and focusing her energy on hybrid label and radio show ‘Brave New Rave’.

The metaphor of life as a journey is deeply embedded in most cultures. But it’s particularly apt for Joyce Muniz. Born in Brazil, she moved to Vienna in her teens and now splits her time between there, where she has her studio and a show on national radio station FM4, and Berlin. She started her career as a DJ and MC at Vienna’s Flex club, then found fame as a vocalist, touring alongside Major Lazer, before dedicating herself to production, supported by labels such as Exploited, Get Physical, Permanent Vacation, International DJ Gigolo and Pets. Most recently she took her music on the road, performing live with different orchestras across Germany as part of the Synth Live project, the first woman to join them. All this is alongside continual DJing, recently touring Australia to tick off playing every continent – bar the less-than-club-friendly Antarctica. Now turn up the volume and spread the word!

Blank Wave Guest Mix 025: Moderna & Joyce Muniz (Live at Garbicz Festival)

Joyce Muniz's single 'In Der Nacht' taken from her latest album 'Zeitkapsel' gets an update for the dancefloor by Joyce herself.
Yet it’s pulsing electro strut – somewhere between 80s new wave and 2000s nu rave – and German-sung lyrics about the surreal, hypnagogic state connecting dreams and reality, tie together various formative influences Muniz re-explores on ‘Zeitkapsel – an album she wrote over lockdown while reflecting on the various facets of her career as a DJ, singer and MC, and producer.
Muniz moved to Vienna, Austria, in the mid-90s, and the larger than life aesthetic and tongue-in-cheek humour of hugely successful Austrian artists such as Falco, Supermax and EAV hangs large on ‘In Der Nacht’, which translates as ‘in the night’.
The lyrics arose spontaneously from an improvised session. Stylist, DJ, performer and queer activist Karl Michael, who also lives in Vienna, was in Berlin to share some new outfits with Muniz. But when she played him the track, saying she needed a rapper, the two set to work, recording Michael’s prosecco-fuelled musings on a phone.
With the stream-of-consciousness flow providing a hazy, playful edge to Muniz’s dark, melodic undertones, ‘In Der Nacht’ pays tribute to a rich vein of experimental, European, electronic pop. But it also echoes mid-2000s, when German electro house recast this heritage and Muniz was finding her feet as an artist in her own right.

Brazilian born come Berlin resident Joyce Muniz teams up with Algerian born come Rome resident DJ producer Sara Bluma for their phenomenal Kompakt debut “Beats & Lines”, an uplifting electro disco affair with plenty of pop appeal. “I met Sara Bluma a year ago, when she booked me to play at one of her parties in Rome. We connected straight away. It was a matter of time that we decided to make some music together. I had this idea for a while, so I sent it to Sara and asked her if she would like to do some vocals. She came up with this great fun text. This tune interprets the energy from both of us. Which is supposed to be fun!“. Mission accomplished… The good vibes between Sara and Joyce are definitely contagious!

London’s Hardt Antoine is back to the mothership with a bang! “I Will” is a sensual, percussion-driven house anthem for those morning hours, when spirits are high and the sense of unity is palpable. “La Mosca” is taking a more hypnotic approach, putting a joyous chant of unknown origin to good use. Joyce Muniz Reinvents Moderna’s “Love is Love” with a Pulsating Electro Remix.

Renowned Brazilian-born, Berlin-based producer and DJ Joyce Muniz has put a fresh spin on Moderna’s heartfelt track, “Love is Love.” The remix, set to drop on Brave New Rave on September 20th, is the latest remix from Moderna’s acclaimed album, The Future Is Among Us.

Muniz’s reinterpretation of “Love is Love” transports listeners back to the euphoric era of early 2000s electro and new rave. With its pulsing beats and infectious energy, the remix pays homage to the vibrant queer and rave communities that have shaped both artists’ careers.

Brazilian-born Joyce Muniz immersed herself in the world of electronic music after moving to Austria at the age of 12. By the age of 16, she purchased her first 1212s and became one of Vienna’s youngest DJs. When the raw and pulsating sounds of Brazilian dance music baile funk infiltrated European house and techno, Muniz connected with her origins by providing vocals for Viennese producer Stereotyp. Solidifying her stance as a multitalented artist and MC, Muniz satisfied her craving to produce by diving deep into house music, carving out her own niche through a smooth-yet-funky sound often complimented by sultry vocals and thumping basslines.

’An early coup for Exploited was 2011's 'Morning Love', Muniz's collaboration with Louie Austen. An old school Viennese crooner who'd worked alongside the rat pack in Las Vegas, he'd risen to prominence again after the turn of the millennium, alongside the likes of Peaches and Gonzalez, on the crest of electroclash. With his lived-in vocals riding a spacey house groove punctuated by snippets of breakbeats, Austen was so impressed with Muniz that he asked her to produce his next album.

This mutual respect was to arise again in the shape of Maya Jane Coles, who helped get Muniz's music into the hands of 20:20 Vision, so far resulting in two Eps. Then Richie Hawtin got hold of an unreleased track and played it on his Ibiza Boiler Room. “I really was wondering how Richie Hawtin got it!” Joyce said. Still, got it he had, leaving just the clearance of its Kraftwerk sample from 'It's More Fun to Compute' and the addition of a vocal by ex-Jungle Brother Bam, for the modern day hip-house of 'Back in the Days' to become a hit for Exploited last year.’ (DJMag) Not to forget her collaboration track ’Warriors’ with Bpitch longstay Kiki or her recent remix of Traffic Signs aka Steve Bug and Jake the Rapper’s ’Cookie Jar’.

Her next release ’You Always Get Me High’ will drop on Exploited in May.

It was fitting that Brazilian-born, Austria-based artist Joyce Muniz broke through in an era characterised by the cross-pollination and globalisation of music. Initially combining the sounds and rhythms of her home country with contemporary European electronic sounds, she later morphed into a house / techno producer of the highest calibre. Along the way she worked with the likes of Maya Jane Coles and Viennese legends Kruder & Dorfmeister and released on influential imprints like 2020 Vision and Shir Khan’s Exploited. It’s the latter which has been her main platform for releasing music since 2011 and where she now unleashes her full-length debut album, Made In Vienna.

The album showcases the latest evolution of her sound, moving her from the dancefloor into a space somewhere between the club and the home, aided by a slew of perfectly crafted vocals.“This album took almost two years to make” she reveals. “I met a lot of people during my tours. I also brought a lot of people to Vienna to work with me.” Her symbiotic relationship with the Austrian capital sees her put in as much as she takes out of it. She is part of the fabric of the city’s musical scene, from her show on national radio station FM4 to her residency at the sadly deceased Pratersauna.

With a long gestation period and a cast of collaborators picked up through her journeys across the world, Made In Vienna is a record that embodies Muniz’s recent life and experiences, and makes it all the more personal and charismatic as a result. “It’s hard to say what this album is” she elaborates on the record’s identity. “I can imagine people dancing to it in the club but also in the car, or hearing it on the radio or at home. I think it really depends of the mood of the listeners.” Indeed, with the lines between the clubs and the radio blurrier than ever, her approach to this debut record couldn’t be better suited to 2016.

Kat Vinter’s honeyed vocal on Cover Me Up gets the album going in fine style, countered by male singer Knixx’s soulful delivery on Drop In Pressure as a follow-up. 
Simple Poetry shows she doesn’t rely on vocals to make a captivating track, however, with lush chords pulsing over a succinct arrangement. Wake Beside You shows her prowess in the b-line department with Christa Vi’s higher registers providing the perfect counterbalance to the phat bottom end. Hide with Enequist takes her musicality to new heights with gliding harmonies and xylophones and Human Life collaboration Deeper takes the melodies into a moodier place. Gotta Love It is one of her typically guttural, low-slung club workouts. Daydreaming provides a gently pumping and euphoric groove. After this comes Angelique Bianca’s sultry tones on the techy Wehbba co-production Sleepless, and her Kraftwerk-sampling single Back In The Days with Jungle Brothers legend Bam’s inimitable hip-house stylings showing what a diverse range of sounds and songs Muniz is able to eke out of the house/techno template. Album closer Silent Crime presents the album’s most delicate and fragile moment.

It’s not easy to make a cohesive, convincing album that marries the best of both worlds, but Joyce Muniz has done in seemingly effortless fashion.

With a string of club-focused hit records on Exploited Records, the Vienna-Berlin based DJ and producer Joyce Muniz has been a driving force in European dance music since exploding onto the scene over a decade ago. Muniz, whose roots stretch back to Brazil, released her debut ’Made In Vienna’ last year, bringing together a wide array of global talents.
This year she remixed DJ Hell on Gigolo (to be released soon), produced a track for english electropop singer-songwriter Little Boots, contributed a mix for Paul Simons legendary Graceland album from 1986 (inspired by his recordings in South Africa collaborating with African artists) and has an EP on american label Culprit coming.
On her new single ’Mushroom Disco’ for Exploited, Joyce is going all electro disco! Guess what!

Long-standing Exploited artist Joyce Muniz returns to the label with a killer new track, featuring vocals from Circus Company talent, Aquarius Heaven. Continuing the brooding feel of her recent output, it looks set to do big things.

Aquarius Heaven’s warped vocals make for the perfect accompaniment to Joyce’s electro-infused techno production, where jagged synth arpeggios rub up against her sharp and snappy percussion and bass hovers menacingly below. It’s got a big room feel thanks to its rasping reverbs and dramatic vibes, with moments of real intensity as the synths swell and the percussion becomes more insistent. A powerful yet spacious production, it punches hard in all the right places. 

A remix comes from upcoming LA techno producer, Shaded, who recently enjoyed support on John Digweed’s Transitions radio show. Powered by undulating waves of sub bass, it builds up from a minimal patchwork of bleep tones and intricate percussion to incorporate the dizzying synth work of the original and the bugged-out vocals. It keeps a low profile, inducing hypnosis via its consistent, insistent slow-burning energy, making it one for the more heads-down dancefloors.

Joyce recently released on DJ Hell’s International DeeJay Gigolo Records and Culprit, and produced British pop star Little Boots’ new single Shadows. She will also release a very special remix of a Paul Simon track via Sony Music later this year.

The metaphor of life as a journey is deeply embedded in most cultures. But it’s
particularly apt for Joyce Muniz.
Born in Brazil, she moved to Vienna in her teens and now splits her time between
there, where she has her studio and a show on national radio station FM4, and
Berlin. She started her career as a DJ and MC at Vienna’s Flex club, then found
fame as a vocalist, touring alongside Major Lazer, before dedicating herself to
production, supported by labels such as Exploited, Get Physical, Permanent
Vacation, International DJ Gigolo and Pets. Most recently she took her music on the
road, performing live with different orchestras across Germany as part of the Synth
Live project, the first woman to join them. All this is alongside continual DJing,
recently touring Australia to tick off playing every continent – bar the
less-than-club-friendly Antarctica.
Her second album ‘Zeitkapsel’, German for time capsule, retraced many of the steps
she’s taken, while also launching her Joyce Muniz Music imprint. ‘Never Brushing
The Sound’, featuring British MC Le3 bLACK. echoed the trip-hop and downtempo
that surrounded her in late ‘90s Vienna. The d&b of ‘Bangalore Girl’, supported by DJ
Marky, recalled the music she first MCed over. And ‘Imagine’, fronted by iconic
vocalist Roland Clark, reflected the deep love of house that inspired her to make
music. The biggest hit, however, was ‘Arrivederci Bella’. A jacking love letter to
electro house, but also a break-up track, it featured Muniz rapping in Portuguese, the
first time she’d used her own voice since her baile-funk-inspired outings in the mid
2000s.
The album’s cover, part surrealist painting, part visionary experience, reflects an
accompanying spiritual path. Diagnosed with cancer in her early 30s, Joyce returned
to Brazil and her experiences with plant medicines reconnected her to her
grandfather’s shamanism. This rebirth reconfigured her attitude to creativity and life.
When Covid hit she explored the breadth of her music making – resulting in
‘Zeitkapsel’ - and sharpened the technical skills that make her a go-to workship host

These avenues mean Joyce can roam where she chooses. Remixing Chicks On
Speed and collaborating with the UK’s Detachments, she’s re-exploring the electro
roots that brought her to the attention of DJ Hell many years ago, now a mentor. But
with the on-going support of Âme, Dixon, Claptone and Green Velvet and more, as
well as thousands of Shazams each week, she continues to explore sounds,
collaborating with artists across the world.
Alongside weekly gigs in Europe and frequent visits to America, Joyce often returns
to play Brazil. This was rewarded with the cover feature of her proud nation's
Mixmag. Winning new fans each visit to her birth country of over 200 million, there’s
no doubt she has plenty more road to travel.
