Lonely Like You (Acoustic Demo)

I wrote "California" as my version of a pop song. I was going through a period of listening to a lot of Tom Petty and became obsessed with the "California-Rock" sound of artists like Petty, The Eagles, and Ryan Adams. While striving to capture the same feeling presented through that style of music, I figured I'd write about California as well.

Lonely Like You

California

"Lonely Like You" is my most open and honest song to date. It deals with the topic of loneliness, one that comes attached with a stigma of shame for most people. Everybody feels alone sometimes, yet not everyone talks about how normal it is. The song also encompasses dealing with depression and anxiety. When I become anxious and/or depressed, I tend to isolate myself or push away from people, which leads to feelings of loneliness or being misunderstood. I had also been thinking about the idea of loneliness within current or potential relationships. Often times, people look for loneliness in a potential partner as something they can fix or care for. Just as often, lonely people are looking for someone to "save them" or fix their loneliness. Sometimes, we all just want to be saved by somebody who can make our problems, if only for a moment, seem nonexistent. This song also deals with the toxicity of thinking that temporary encounters are a fix or a cure for loneliness (they usually leave you feeling lonelier than before). The "you" in the song is representative of the hypothetical person of your fantasies.

"Tuscaloosa" is about watching the person who just might be "the one" move on in their life with someone new. This person lives just far enough away from you to prevent any level of commitment from being justifiable.

Tuscaloosa

"Fantasy" is one of my favorite songs that I have written to date. The song is about the beauty of being unique and individual within relationships. It deals with the concept of loving someone so much that asking them to conform to your expectations, or fantasies, would be too much to ask because that wouldn't truly be "them". Once you rid yourself of unnecessary expectations within a relationship, things become much simpler and you find clarity. There is a magic in the way that we are all similar in certain ways but very different in others.

Fantasy

After several years of touring as a guitarist with various Nashville-based acts, J.P. Burr is generating quite a buzz in the Middle Tennessee area as a solo artist and songwriter. Taking inspiration from a delicate mix of rock, country, folk, and blues, J.P. strives to create classic-sounding music that will stand the test of time. His songwriting is vulnerable, raw, and genuine, with much of it openly reflecting on personal growth and struggles. J.P. Burr released his debut EP, 'Lonely Like You', in the summer of 2021, and has since been writing and recording songs for a followup project.
