The sounds of sinister city streets and a malfunctioning satellite picking up an otherworldly radio station, JPS X HOOVES release their debut EP ‘Ritual’, out May 4th on Muti Music.

The long-awaited release from the Australian collaborators has been tried and tested across late-night dance floors and early morning sound systems around the globe. Spun by world-renown DJs and producers and collected like some rare, mysterious sample by long-time fans of The Operatives-founder Jerry Poon, known as JPS, and producer and furious drummer HOOVES aka Johnny Clayton.

A testament to both producers' years spent as dance floor devastating DJs, the influences across ‘Ritual EP’ swerve between the heavily assaulting bass more commonly found on a pirate radio station in the murky end of London, to the freeing swing of footwork in a warehouse party in Chicago, to the thundering drums that offer a flashback to a sweaty drum n’ bass rave in Melbourne. ‘Ghost Fad’ captures choppy beats and a warped vocal sample with a looming impending bass line kick. ‘Pariah’ soars with melting synths and menacing percussion, while ‘Gu’ leads with whirring police sirens and unnerving voodoo chant into a gritty experimentalism. Title track ‘The Ritual’ expands on the dark intensity of the EP, the slow-burning sound comparable a mysterious field recording of an extra-terrestrial tribe.

JPSXHOOVES - THE RITUAL

Hailing from Singapore, JPS move to Melbourne in 1999 opened up the world of Drum n Bass to him. Launching the successful Bassix, local parties with Blanco allowed him his first taste of promoting and secured his place as one of Melbourne’s most respected DJs. This led on to the establishment of Elementz, with Blanco and DJ Fletch, which is now one of Australia’s most successful DnB events teams. Elementz Sound Collective has been described many times as Australia's foremost drum n bass promotions group. One only has to look back through the countless high quality events represented in Australia by Elementz throughout the years to acknowledge that this title is entirely deserving. Representing and touring international DnB artists and in the process making many important contacts Elementz has established itself as the primary Australian touring agent whilst working with overseas artist managements for the likes of Goldie, Suv, Teebee, Roni Size, J Majik, Noisia , Klute, Total Science, DJ Cash Money and many more.
 
 JPS loves digging in his collection to present a multi Genred Mash-up of hip hop, funk, soul, future beats, Salsa, Samba, dancehall, DnB, Reggae or basically whatever else comes to mind. In recent times he has also started exploring production by means of collaborations with Kiat, Johnny Hooves and Motive, proving successful and leading to being signed to OBSEsessions and Qilin as well as receiving play by the likes of Concord Dawn, Asides, Kiat, Flying Lotus and more. JPS current focus (as well as playing weekly and promoting international parties) is on his management group, The Operatives, an agency that focuses on artists in the Asia Pacific and aims to raise the profile of local artists throughout the world. JPS now manages some of the Melbourne DnB talent and looks after NZ superstars Concord Dawn, Klute, Opiuo, Dizz1, Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer for Australiasia. 

The Operatives have strived to achieve the most forward thinking individuals in this arena of music. Having already hosted numerous DnB tours including the likes of Goldie, Concord Dawn, Marcus Intalex, Doc Scott and many more. Over the last few years, the Operatives has hosted a range of events including a vast array of artists including DJ Craze, Gilles Peterson, Platinum Pied Pipers, Recloose, The Nextmen, Mark de Clive Lowe, Freddie Cruger, Aloe Blacc, Jazzanova, Maurice Fulton, Theo Parish, DJ Marky, The Mixologists, Hudson Mohawke as well as run the Australian tours for Gaslamp Killer, and  Flying Lotus. He was also the chief booker for Redbull Music Academy 2006 in Melbourne.
 
Having played to packed crowds in Singapore, Australia, UK and the US as well as supporting the top internationals on the touring circuit including Goldie, Mark Rae, Ursurla Rucker, Krust, Die, Roni Size, Patife, Total Science, Klute, Zinc, BSE, Ben Mono, Marcus Intalex, Suv, Bad Company, Friction, Ray Keith, Trace, Moving Fusion, SS, Kila Kela, Pendulum, Bryan Gee, The Mixologists, Andy C, Subfocus, Mampi Swift, Doc Scott, Bryan G, C4C and Kiwi boyz Upbeats, Shapeshifter Sound System and Concord Dawn as well as local heros Pendulum and many more, this dub styled warrior always keeps it fresh and running.
