The main mix from Tricking iT2 - a gaming video I produced back in 2004 that showed off the insane trick jumping and physics breaking skills that a bunch of quake3 playing guys known as iT (Infinite Trajectory) were pulling off. The video went on to win many thousands of fans and win awards for it's awesomeness.

Tricking iT2 - Main mix

The first of a set of year-specific goa-trance mixes I made back in 2004. The series was intended to show off what I thought of as the best tracks released from each year, however the first in the series had tracks that were released earlier than 2004, e.g the opening track by astrix was released in 2002; I fell out of love with trance in the late 90s as the first wave of psychedelic trance didn't really do it for me, but it started to fall out of favour again in the early 2000s and this mix seemed like a good way to catch up.

This month's trip starts off in the early 90s commercial side of Goa Trance, as a scene it was at it's most popular thanks to the likes of Paul Oakenfold's Goa Mix, and tracks he published on the Perfecto label. Goa 2005 - part 1 - mixed by jrb

The world is full of parties, in jungles, in valleys and mountains, in deserts and fields, and in forests. What do they all sound like?

Production Notes
- This track has morphed several times over its creation. It started out as a remix or retelling of a very old mod track I created in FastTracker2 called 'dead flies', and then morphed in to an experiment in using a reference track as a guide for a track's arrangement. This reference / arrangement experiment worked well, and I quickly had a nicely progressing track, but after a couple of minutes it lead to a dead end. With no coherent 'story' to the track it felt like a jumbled mess of disperate ideas. I added more vocal loops which were again, taken from all over the planet. Persian chants, Tibetan throat singing, south American tribespeople murmerings, and anything else. Separately it sounded cool, but it wasn't until stumbling on the Goa Gil interview that it fell in to place. "24 hours in the forest, everywhere in the world". Now let's start throwing little clips away and trimming the track down... I even threw away the reference track as it had served its purpose. Up until the last editing session the opening vocal hit was different, and the main bass samples still needed an overhaul.

This started out as a standard 4:4 track, but after assembling some of the elements I realised it sounded better in triplets. Some excellent community members over at Projektor, Mute, and Psychill community gave some great feedback of an early WIP that meant changing the bass sounds and a few other elements to get them sitting better in the overall mix. 

An interesting experiment this time around was taking 4:4 percussive sample looks, and re-timing them in to triplets to make unique and organic sounds. Percussion is still my weakest spot, or the bit I care about the least, so it's always interesting to stumble on new ways to do something.

This is the first project that's really killed my PC. I have a 64core threadripper, with 64gb, and towards the end of this project I struggled to play it live without freezing many of the tracks. Omnisphere is used here, and it's really hungry on resources..

Dream Machine (original mix) 146 F

Lambanog is a strong distilled drink originally made by the tribes people of the Philippines from the sap of the coconut tree. In this song we wake up in the morning, and venture out to the distillery, before getting more than a little merry on Lambanog

Production Notes
- As always, I set myself some challenges with this track. I wanted to make something tribal, chilled out in the style of "shemanic tales" by Astrix, or "stardust" by ETN. Both which are exquisitely produced tracks that I later learnt were in a subgenre of psytrance called Zenonesque. Very different from things I normally listen to, or would ever think I could make to any degree of success. I also wanted to throw away the rulebook when it came to bass. The main bass is a) synthesised using a square wave, which is not commonly used in psytrance b) sits all over the top of the kick drum, which a mortal sin in psytrance c) has a lot of analogue-esque slides to give it a more natural feel and d) seemingly simple, but ever evolving and multi-faceted with layers - although it only has 3 variations in pattern. 
- With this being produced over the black Friday season there were a lot of stupidly good deals on synths, which all got rolled in to this project. This includes heavier use of Omnisphere, but includes UVI Falcon 3, Meteor, Asteroid, and World Suite 2. I also purchased I Wish and Manipulator from Polyverse Music which are used more than you would image. One of the main synth patters is me rambling in to the microphone and altered using Polyverse software to give it an Infected Mushroom or even Shpongle vibe. Sound-wise I'm happy with how the track came out.
- I committed to not using copyrighted sounds for this track - any samples aren't from licensed packs, or my voice, are from YouTube videos that are flagged for Creative Commons usage. It's here that I've tapped in to my wife's heritage and used rural and rainforest soundscapes from Philippines - hence the chickens. The flutes and tribal singing are also filipino in origin. - Flow-wise, this track definitely has some energy level issues. The track starts and stops and starts and stops, instead of consistently building to peaks. But this somewhat fits with the zenonesque / tribal subgenre, but also with the story of the track - drinking shots Lambanog... :)

21 years of goa-trance, part 1 - 1990-1999

There's nothing wrong with the world, it's just You and Me!

Production notes
- This tracked started as an attempt to create a minimalistic psytrance track. Few elements, the challenge being to hold attention for the duration of the song. It's more challenging than it sounds since it's very easy to stray in to repetitiveness. The track I took inspiration from used a breakbeat sample in its intro, so I attempted to do the same. However I very quickly mangled the Amen break in to an evolving percussive pad that morphs in to stabs towards the end of sections. 
- Kick and bass are very low effort. The kick is a sample from Loopcloud with its transient and tail reduced slightly. The bass is from a Falcon 3 preset pack with some slight control to get it sitting better with the kick when the track picks up. Getting the kick and bass sounding right has just made the whole rest of the track a joy to work on, and it needed very little effort at the mixing and mastering stage. This is the first track where I've legitimately rendered bass hits to samples and arranged them on the timeline instead of using raw midi, or bought samples in a Sampler. Hopefully it sounds good!
- A lot of the more intricate glitchy sounds used on percussive hits, or even the main vocal sample are heavily using the Creative Delay Ableton Live rack from Impulse Control - https://www.youtube.com/@impulsecontrol. It's such a versatile set of controls that I've modified to have wet/dry controls.
- This track's purchased plugins are Arturia's EFX Refract, which is a great spatial widener or for adding texture - it's used on the indian singing sample to add a layer of strings that adds so much depth and production value. Love it! Waves' Space Rider, which is a stereo field / delay / reverb plugin for vocals, but it works well on most things to just add a bit of polish. Diamond Dynamic Saturator from Acustica - which is used to add some serious bite to the mid-high frequencies, it just makes everything stand out.

A jumpy wobbly track that harks back to the fun oldskool vibe of goa and psytrance. 

production notes
- another track that I arranged incredibly quickly up to the first drop. The sound elements fell in to place, and it had the bouncy vibe I wanted. 
- Originally inspired by "sacred shamens" by Terra and Major 7, a track with a tribal, organic atmospheric opener, but this track has a very different sound. However, part way in to making the track I heard "Plant Medicine" by Avalon & Electric Universe that had used the same tribal chant sample pack as used here in Froggy Wobble, which totally killed my enthusiasm for finishing the track. However, thanks for inspiration from a couple different psytrance producer communities my motivation was renewed, and here we are.
- I always set myself a challenge when making tracks, for this track it was transitioning from triplets to quarter note part way through the track, whilst still keeping the essence of the track. That meant creating basslines that could fit both with minimal reworkings, and using percussive loops in both sections - which required a lot of editing. 
- a lot of hard lessons learnt around gratuitous use of clippers, saturators and spectral resonance tools which meant the final stages of the arrangement and preparation for mixing and mastering took way too many iterations!

This started out with a narrative I wrote for the track about a lone figure that awoke without memory in a cave that appeared to be sentient, and inhabited ravers entranced by strange relics. The usual psychedelic trope stuff. I recorded the vocals myself, and used them to inform the initial arrangement of the track. It became evident that the story would result in a evolving and winding musical expedition. However, my voice really didn't suit it. So I used elevenlabs to generate a new AI version of the vocals - that are used here. Later I stripped most of the vocals out, however the story they informed is now the song.

Each track I make offers new challenges.. here I really wanted to shift genres and sounds a lot. It sounds quite basic, but there's a lot going on here from a bassline that absolutely isn't traditional psytrance (although the base pattern is inspired by "Robotoised" by Quirk), to shifting from saw bass, to square wave, to switching the whole thing up in to a Brazil-inspired shponglised breakdown - considering I had no knowledge of this musical style, let alone how to produce it. However the real challenge was finishing this track. The arrangement has been 'complete' for months now with me tweaking and trying to polish it up enough to release it. 

I also decided to make this a multi-part song. Again, inspired by Shpongle albums where tracks eb and flow between each other. Part 2 of this isn't included here, but I hope I can make it become a full mixed album. Something for later.

unlucky for some, part 13 of the long running 21 years of goa trance returns. This episode features some tracks that, whilst strictly not goa-trance were definitely played at goa parties during those early formative years. I specifically remember some of these tracks being played in illegal moonlit parties in the countryside on the outskirts of my home town in middle-England, and are deeply personal to me. The likes of Li Kwan's Point Zero, and Sublime's TGV were tracks that originally turned me on to the trance movement away from rave and the jungle scenes that were so predominant in the UK in the early 90s. Great sounds that paved the way for the oncoming onslaught of acid and psychedelic trance and techno. Enjoy this next chapter in the history of sound.

April 2016's episode. 

2016, minus part 16, gives us the year 2000. Every track this episode was released in one form or another in Y2K.

Now, I was around for early goa, and was even producing goa trance and DJing in the mid 90s, but when psytrance first came towards the end of the millennia I really didn't like it; it felt like lazily produced, unimaginative trance. My focus shifted to house, drum and bass, and even europop (don't judge!) for 5 or 6 years, until goa trance kinda came back. So it was with trepidation that I started to look for tracks for this episode. Were there any 'classics'? I dunno! If they were I'm sure I missed them, or wouldn't like them.. But upon searching through the virtual crate I found tracks I definitely knew, that are really good, original, innovative, great sounding and expertly produced tracks. I was a fool to dismiss first time around!

yes.. it's over 6 hours long! 

So here we are. The final 21 years chapter. I originally created a 21 years mix in 2011 to mark 21 years since the supposed birth of goa trance in 1990. Really, just to celebrate great tracks that I had enjoyed, and still enjoyed. I never imagined there would be a part 2, let alone a part 21! Through creating this series I now know more about the genre I thought I knew intimately. It didn't start in 1990, it didn't die with the birth of psytrance... psychedelic electronic music is decades old, and continues to evolve, and continues to be played on Goa-style beach parties the world over!

This final chapter started out as a remix of tracks I'd used in the other 20 episodes. A best of the best, if you will, but it quickly became evident that wasn't going to work. Besides so many amazing tracks had been missed. What we have here is a year by year journey from some early 80s psychedelic music, through acid house, new beat, proto goa, acid trance, goa trance, psytrance, full on psytrance, progressive psytrance, nitzo goa and everything in between. It's taken 5 years to make this 21 year trip down memory lane... never stop partying, and never forget your roots!

This final chapter has also pushed my offline mixing skills to the limit.. hitting the limitations of several DAWs as I've thrown more lossless tracks and effects racks at them to try to get the right sound. It's been a technical journey too!

Years of Goa Trance, part 01 - 1993-2015

So, before we start - there isn't a whole lot of ''goa trance'' in this goa trance mix. Some of the tracks aren't even that early, but what we do have here is a evolution of music starting in the mid to late 80s and early 90s with glimpses at what it could become.. This mix shows an evolution of acid house and techo in to trance and psychedelic goa trance. Along the way you'll encounter some classics, and some unearthed gems. A lot of the tracks here brought back such powerful memories for me upon hearing them again. For example, Higher Intelligence Agency's Delta, and Orbital's LC1. Hearing for the first time in decades opened an emotional doorway to the teenage me and all these tracks that I always assumed in my later life were trancey, or goa trance, but in reality weren't. In the early 90s goa trance didn't exist. Parties in Goa and around the world did exist though, where people opened themselves up to the ever changing ocean of new and evolving electronic music. All was welcome, and we all danced to the same beat. Now genres define us too strictly.. instead just let it all wash over you. :)

technical notes: As 80s and 90s music spans a great technological divide a lot of tracks aren't mastered well, if at all. Some are from vinyl or other lossy sources. As a result the whole mix sounded bad. I've tried to equalise the best I can using pink noise EQ matching to try and offer some consistency. Maybe it worked, maybe it didn't. Let me know. Some of these tracks aren't early.. a couple from 2000s snook in because I'd had them labelled incorrectly in my collection. Deal with it! :D

Years of GOA Trance 18 - 1993-2014

It's normally hearing a specific track that kicks me in to producing another episode of this classic retro trance series. For part 19 it was hearing Jean-Michel Jarre's new album, and it's second track. There have been a lot of trance remixes of JMJ's work over the years, but all of them felt, to me, forced. Not good tracks in their own right. The opening track here - "Oxygene 2 (JMJ Rework of Kosinski Remix)" is a remix of a remix of a sequel. It's great, it sounds like a properly progressive trance version of music I listened to as a child. And great inspiration to kick of a new mix. I've not really touched too much on progressive trance so enjoy the departure, and happy new year.

Goa and psychedelic trance oldskool and nu cool mixes for days!

English hobbyist DJ and psytrance producer, his head in the clouds and his ears in the psychedelic back allies of the past. Decades ago jrb deejayed with tactile formats - vinyl, CD, mixing desks, now it's all done in software. Not live, non-destructive, remastered and spliced to high heaven. Earlier still jrb made music with the primitive fasttracker2 software music software for the PC, and ran music groups OnyxTrance (nxt), Blackhole (bh) as well as releasing for other internet module labels, such as Chill, Twist, and LoK. In between he released a few bootlegs (mixing vocals from one track with the backing from another track, with often hilarious results).

Some random modules or early DJ mixes from this yesteryear era may appear here from time-to-time... don't be alarmed!
