This is the recording from my set at Parameter 10, Public Works, San Francisco on 17 May 2025. 

The room was comically packed by the time I started (11pm) and the crowd was visibly itching to lift off, but it was so early in the night and the rest of the (stacked) lineup leant so heavily towards UK and bass-heavy music that I decided to leave the dubstep to the professionals, keep it slow and go in the opposite direction: mid 120s, wriggly, psychedelic, gurgly, engrossing, a little weird but also sometimes fun. Maybe on some level I was level preparing myself for Return To The Source in Detroit the following weekend – though ironically I ended up playing much faster and with more broken beats at RTTS than I did here. In any case, I had a blast. Been really enjoying exploring the 120-130 zone recently. Thanks to Nick for having me back, hope you all enjoy the recording.

"On December 31st, 1986, a New Year’s Party was in full swing at the legendary Music Box, an underground club owned by Robert Williams, with revolutionary resident DJ Ron Hardy. By the next day, it was shut down by the city. The club would never reopen.

The Music Box and Hardy’s massively influential marathon sets there have gone on to shape Chicago and the world, even if people don't know it. The closure of that space, and Ron’s passing five years later remain an enormous point of grief for that generation of Chicagoans. I have spoken at length with many attendees of those parties and one thing is clear - the memories of those nights are as fresh today as they were in the 80s. That place was their whole life. He was like family to them.

So when my friend and previous employee of the Music Box, Stacey Collins, called me to tell me she had found a box of Hardy tapes, I freaked out. We set out about digitizing them with archivist Jacob Arnold. In that set of tapes, one stood out in particular: “Goin Down Slow; Hardy's Last Marathon ‘87”. This was a recording of that last party, after it was shut down by the cops and had to move to a new venue up north. It's abnormally slow for Hardy, who was known for playing so aggressively that attendees began to shout for him to “beat” them with sound - he opts here for slow jams, or as they're called in Chicago, “stepper's cuts” (“Stepping” is a social dance culture originating in Chicago’s South Side). This side of Hardy is one attendees often speak of, his softer, sweeter side - but there's not many recordings of it. Ron Hardy - Goin Down Slow - Last Marathon @ COD's 1987

Born in Bari, Italy, in 1984, he has been living and working in Berlin since 2013, where his artistic identity has been deeply shaped.

Previously boss and co-founder of the duo and label Sons of Traders together with his cousin Tans— a project that is now concluded, @jrmiketansella is now entering a new chapter as an underground DJ, uncompromising and fully dedicated to his personal musical vision.

Through his work in Sons of Traders, he played a decisive role in the publication of releases on labels such as The Black Lodge, Frigio Records, Squirrels on Film,Feral Colony,Gravitational Waves, and more, cementing his place in the underground scene.

In recent years, he has become widely recognized for his consistent collaboration with Mutant Radio Tbilisi.

His work now focuses on free-form, immersive sets, designed for both radio broadcasts and club environments, blending experimental textures with a deep-rooted understanding of underground culture.

{Traxx} Presents- The Definitive Articles of House Music Chapter 7

Here is the recording of my set from @freerotation.festival 2026. I played outside in the Dome, in the groggy afternoon sun of a heatwave. Sloooow seemed like the only reasonable choice in the circumstances, so it’s 100bpm all the way. Friends afterwards told me my set was giving “sandworm” and I’m running with it. It’s pretty different from my Freero recordings of yore – more measured in pace, sexy, chuggy, though it does manage to go full freakout in the middle somewhere and then back again – and I’m happy with that. Felt good to do something different this year and I think the recording is a personal favorite.

As for Freerotation itself: I’ll try not to gush insufferably, so suffice to say this festival (or is it a house party?) has meant a great deal to me over the years. Returning in 2024 after a 5-year break, I wondered if its golden era might have passed, but these last two editions have been my favorites by a healthy margin. I’ve watched my friends play jawdropping sets, formed and deepened friendships, and connected anew with a sense of meaning in rave that had been feeling elusive for some time. This year in particular I spent an unprecedented amount of time on the dancefloor – a broader story for another day, but I’ll just say that dance itself has opened some paths for me recently and brought me a lot of joy and purpose in whatever it is we’re all doing here. 14 years after my first Freero I’m still coming away from each one feeling grateful and inspired. Deepest thanks as ever to @steevio.suzybee for all the love, care, attention and work they put into this, and to the broad community of workers, volunteers and artists that all contribute. <3
