Atlanta-based DJ; JSPORT, spent the start of the global pandemic meticulously learning the craft of production. After countless sketches, they have created five otherworldly drum poems for their debut EP, “Out of Bounds.” 

Whether it’s a bass, a snare or a clang, percussion is front and center at almost every moment, but always paired with a careful attention to melodic detail. 

The release opens up elegantly with Zenon, as sparse, detailed patterns are sprinkled on top of an infectious house groove. Next is the sinister yet sexy Gully Bop, where a soca-infused pulse meets darker UK style bass. Capoeira Drum is an intricate network of shuffling rhythms, with each hit moving together as if they were intermeshing gears. Panting breaths and baile funk style horns weave in and out on Hyper Drive, through a maze of stuttering high hats and ghost vocals. Guillotine Drum closes things out menacingly, with aggressive slams riding a wave of humming low end and wails from the abyss. 

Cadences from the Caribbean, South America, and the rest of the African Diaspora are carefully pieced together here with JSPORT’s own interstellar vision of club music. There may be intense layers upon layers of percussion on this release, but these aren’t just DJ tools like most drum tracks tend to function as. They’re rich and full, beautifully detailed, and serve as vessels for an exciting new universe of sound, which adds JSPORT to the ranks of producers pointing to the future of global dance music.

We are proud to present to you our newest release : MONSTART VOL.5 [MNSTRT013] 

Including 10 original club music tracks by talented producers from all around the world. What is the club ? What are feelings inside ? We tried to think what club music will be in 2017, each track represents a particular feeling made, a certain attitude and atmosphere, but it boils down to one thing, the tracks are made to dance and nothing else. Simple. 

" Montpellier and Paris-based clubnight and label Monstart follow up from a stellar 2016 crammed full of eclectic releases, parties and Rinse France shows with their 5th compilation to date. Headed up by one of France’s finest DJs, Ouanounou and visionary dancer Chatte Chatoyante, “Monstart Vol. 5” is a love letter to the club and the physical experiences it can offer. Having cut their teeth as promoters before forming the label, there’s a performative element to everything they put out which makes it hard not to bust a groove when you hear a Monstart track. As Ouanounou notes, ‘Dance and music must be associated for us, we can’t even imagine a party without more than just DJs performing.’ 

Building on their vision of an international club sound that represents artists from all around the world, the release features artists from Lithuania, Zambia, Germany, Russia, USA, Denmark and, of course, France. Whilst compilations of Night Slugs-esque club tracks from multiple nationalities has become a stereotyped calling card for small labels like Monstart, what makes this album stand apart from the sea of ‘club-comps’ is how much freedom the producers are given to explore their own sound and identity; pushing the genre to it’s limits. Each track represents a particular feeling, a certain attitude or atmosphere but always it boils down to one focal point; these tracks are made to make you dance and sweat. 

Ryan Wick kicks off the release with “U & I,” which deftly marries percussive UK funky drumbeats with breathy vocal samples. Elsewhere on the release Paradoxe Club’s De Grandi creates an afrobeat-inspired synth workout on “Global” and Hyperboid’s Fisky delivers a trippy house track crammed full of endlessly stuttering delay effects on “Rontonda.” Hexagon Dub’s Sheik rounds things off with Vera, showcasing his unmistakably British ear for an ominous bassline and unexpected counterpoints throughout. 

For the Monstart founders, ‘a world must be created within music to give people a unique and new experience to remember.’ This compilation fully realizes this desire to highlight dance music’s spatial and atmospheric elements. Turn it up loud and dive into the Monstart world. "

QUARANTINE SONIC SQUAD est une communauté de musicien-nes de différents horizons formels et stylistiques, rassemblé-es sous cette seule et même bannière suite aux mesures de confinement radicales prises par l'État français en réponse à l'épidémie de COVID-19. 

L'idée derrière le projet "DAL DE VIVRE" est née de deux contextes spécifiques qui sont les conséquences directes de cette crise socio-sanitaire globale. Tout d'abord, cette situation nouvelle et extra-ordinaire de confinement (temporaire mais non moins nécessaire) qui nous a poussé toutes et tous en tant qu'artistes, interprètes, producteur-ices, instrumentistes, DJs et autre professionnel-les de la musique, à repenser notre activité professionnelle à l'aune d'un repli spatial forcé. Puis en un second temps, la situation plus qu'alarmante dont souffrent les plus démuni-es de nos soeurs et frères humain-es, mal-logé-es, sans-abris et autres occupants de logements insalubres, rendu-es de facto incapables de se confiner sereinement. Cette précarité, déjà visible bien avant l'apparition du virus, est exacerbée par la gestion ultra-libérale des territoires habitables. Effet collatéral d'une époque où la privatisation des biens publics par certaines puissances industrielles et économiques tend à être rendue légitime par les institutions qui devraient pourtant oeuvrer à  leur sauvegarde. Et dont les symptômes ressentis intimement, dans nos chairs, ne font que s'amplifier en ces temps d'urgence sanitaire.

Également conscient-es des engagements militants menés par le DAL (Droit Au Logement) afin de faire bouger les lignes sur ce sujet à une échelle plus globale, nous avons donc décidé de produire un objet musical qui viendrait soutenir leur lutte sur le plan financier (par contribution directe en achetant cet album - à prix libre) tout en constituant un relais à leurs différentes modes d'actions actuels revendications d’urgence : la réquisition des hôtels, meublés touristiques, logements et bureaux vacants pour loger les sans abris mais aussi très mal logés et victimes de violences conjugales et intra-familiales, le moratoire sur les loyers et les factures d’énergie, avec rétablissement et renforcement des APL, l’arrêt de toutes les expulsions...

Malgré ce contexte tout à fait nouveau qui tend à interpeller nos consciences, nous avons produit cet album animé-es par des énergies salvatrices. Tous les morceaux qui le composent sont les produits du confinement et du bouillonnement de ses auteur-ices. Il comprend aussi quelques collaborations inédites d'artistes qui n'auraient d'aventure pas été amenés à travailler ensemble dans une autre temporalité, mais qui se retrouvent ici main dans la main pour créer un contenu musical solidaire et militant. Sa narration a été pensée comme un écoulement, qui vient tout du long se faire remuer par des vagues soniques aux couleurs variées qui, nous l'espérons, rappelleront à nos auditeur-ices à quel point la scène électronique française est riche musicalement. Par delà les frontières du genre et des querelles esthétiques de chapelle. Bonne écoute et bonne lutte !
