UNTITLED (AN ARRAY OF BIRDS SINGING PHRASES FROM POPULAR MUSIC), 2005

A 15 minute loop of manipulated ambient birdsong – the sound of the dawn chorus – designed to be presented as a sound installation in an incidental space.

The piece is constructed by digitally adding additional birdsong to an already existing analogue recording, in this instance a vinyl record distributed at the Venice Biennale 2003 by Henrik Hakansson of the sounds of dawn breaking and dusk falling. To this additional birdsong has been sampled and sequenced through midi-processing, to give the illusion of birds singing phrases from an array of pop songs (Joy Division, ʻLove Will Tear Us Apartʼ; Human League, ʻDonʼt You Want Me Babyʼ; the theme from Star Wars; New Order, ʻBlue Mondayʼ etc). These phrases have then been woven back into the original soundscape to create the illusion of a naturalistic recording of a lively forest.

The piece is subtle in nature, and the adjustments designed to go relatively unnoticed by the inattentive listener. As such it is best installed in a situation where it is likely that the listener would spend an extended period of time with the piece; or as a contrived aural geography, where pockets of the sound installation are stumbled across repeatedly.

In 2006 this piece was played before the trailers as the audience came to settle in the Curzon Cinema, Soho, for a month long period.
