Number One first surfaced on his solo debut ’96 Noid release. It gained widespread support in the clubs and went on to be featured on both DFP’s De-Luxe House Of Funk and Groove Armada’s Back To Mine compilations as well as his own Mangled LP.
Look Into My Eyes is a blissed out Balearic gem that featured on the B side of Ray’s ’10 DFA release and instantly became a firm favourite for many.

Sometimes the quality of talent that we have at our weekly Wednesday party, Midweek Techno, just BLOWS me away. Like does Boston even realize the resource they have right under their NOSES??? Doubtful, but alas, we keep on truckin.

Take for example a few months back when we PROUDLY presented the extraordinary talents of the young producer/live performer Nicholas Jaar. At only 19 years old (a FRESHMAN at Brown University) this young French transplant and musical prodigy has created quite a stir with releases for the likes of Wolf + Lamb and AirDrop Records and now on his own imprint, Clown and Sunset.

Iâ€™ve always been a bit iffy about Ableton sets, quite often it seems like the energy just isnt there. Nicolas Jaarâ€™s performance however, is quite the contrary, his music weaves together like the gils of a french accordion, taking us all over the musical spectrum, way beyond simply DANCE music. Melodies, moods, emotions, seems like skyâ€™s the limit for young Nico.

Just a few more tidbits: Seth Troxlerâ€™s remix of Nicolas Jaar â€œThe Studentâ€ was the flipside to the recent deep bomb â€œAphrika EPâ€ that seems to be getting canned everywhere. Donâ€™t sleep just cuz it doesnâ€™t feature The Angelizer. Also, Nico is in cahoots with fellow Parisian Le Loup (performing at Midweek Techno June 3rd), who has also just released digitally the â€œSee Line Epâ€ on Wolf + Lamb, again with a remix of â€œThe Studentâ€ and another titled â€œNicoâ€™s Bath Danceâ€ which I imagine was created by both of these two yoots.

DJ Koze exists both above and beyond club culture as we know it – his albums and remixes flying free from genre and trend – and symbiotically woven into its heart. Yes, he always abstracts and weirds out the principles of house, techno, hip hop, pop, psychedelia, exotica and so forth, but he does that because he understands them. And when it comes to club-demolishing tracks, he understands those principles as well as just about anybody on earth.

Thus he could create an enduring club tune like 2015's “XTC” that is strange, contemplative, even disturbing, bore little relation to anything around at the time, yet still got bodies moving and sweating better than way more obvious techno bangers. And thus the knock knock album, which melts a million genres and none into one another, can comfortably include “Seeing Aliens”.

“Seeing Aliens” unquestionably is a banger, its bass riff snaking around your body like a python, its high-drama strings, pianos and outbursts of noise designed for maximum crowd pressure release. But, again, it sounds like nothing else, and its dynamics and twists unfold over eight and a half minutes in ways that will mess with your head every time no matter how many times you hear it.

The exclusive b-side track, “Nein König Nein” (“No King No”!), meanwhile, is slightly gentler on the face of it: it's less about sonic pressure, more about hip-shaking syncopation. But it too tells strange fairytales in its peculiar and brain-tweaking accumulation of detail, and though you'll hear archetypal sounds from the heart of house and disco in it, every last one of them becomes new and otherworldly.

Silicone Soul have lined up a succession of exciting releases to mark ten years since their subterranean parallel project and label, Darkroom Dubs first unleashed its uniquely idiosyncratic take on house music.

Having caused supersonic ripples throughout the underground dance community since his debut release on Darkroom Dubs first hit the shelves in 2007, Evgeny Bukreev (AKA Freska) is about to drop his long-awaited debut album.

"Wrong Songs" more than lives up to the promise of the singles and EPs which preceded it, uncurling in a heady blend of booming electronic funk, startling sonic weaving with innate sense of melody, swirlingly spectral in the dense aural meteor showers of vocal shards and sublimely orchestrated mutations of disparate musical ingredients.

Now relocated to Moscow, the Murmansk born producer has mentioned being influenced by Kraftwerk, Black Sabbath and the music of his native Russia, but anything from the percussive attack of early acid house and Detroit techno also pitch in to what he astutely describes as `rhythm and soul'. Appearing also on labels such as Stil Vor Talent, Karate Musik, Manual, Azuli, Lo and Traum Schallplaten [for whom he was asked to remix Minilogue, and didn`t disappoint].

The album blends versions of singles released on Silicone Soul's decade spanning, future-pointing electronic vision Darkroom Dubs, including the buzzed-up judder of "North And South" and sexed-up robo-funk of "Slow Cold Slow" [plus symphonic jazz-tinged flip "Honey from Within" with a flotilla of new outings, including the heaving bass-monster of "Breathing In", booming rattlesnake hump of "Lo Lo Love" and the ghostly "Doves On My Window". Then there's the panting "Ink In", rinky-dink organ carnage of "Some Turns Inside" and weird chorale-draped "Stoned Bytes" ending in the vocal-layered finale "The Kathedral" hinting to another exciting new direction.

Last year Freska also remixed Silicone Soul's "David Vincent's Blues", as part of their esteemed Soma 20 Remix collection. One listen to this astonishing debut album leaves no doubt that these twin career peaks are only the beginning for the man from Murmansk.
