This month’s guest is Berlin based producer and DJ Joseph Richmond-Seaton, also known as @Call-Super.  

Perhaps best known for his incredible, often surreal, abstract, and psychedelic compositions like 2014’s breakthrough Suzi Ecto and 2017’s Arpo, Call Super’s love of music runs deep. He’s a dedicated producer, starting every day in the studio and working away the hours, whether he feels inspired or not. Music is one of the only pursuits, alongside drawing and painting, that allows him to reach a state of total presence — something he considers essential for happiness. In this conversation, we look back on Joe’s childhood, the escapism he’s found in music and art, and the nature of staying present.

Having delicately spread their roots on Ngunnawal/Ngambri soil, their slow and deliberate unfurling has been a privilege to witness. 

Among their wonderous talents is their sense for their surroundings. In their productions and mixes, this capacity for observation, intrigue, and often melancholic reflection pulses to the surface. It bubbles and pops, cracks, grinds, slides, slows and ebbs. Their awareness peaks in high frequency raptures, always balanced atop soft, sustaining lows. key is tapped in. Their music is a portal transmuting the unseen felt to the heard.

Their live sets are legendary in Ngnunnawal/Ngambri country. They’re a DJ, musician, singer, dancer, performer. They’re everything. They’re one half of the event series Portal, which has built a tender reputation for its emphasis on emotion and connection. This mix is much the same. Textures are always in contrast, stretching and softening at the edges, creating room to breathe. Each moment is an energising breath in or a sigh, soaked in pleasure and recognition. key erects a glowing, vine-drenched bridge to better worlds, floating on sensitivity and love, at every moment.

Track 1 of Monarch's Ruin album. Monarch's Ruin is a concept project; the soundtrack of a non-existent dark fantasy film from the 80s. I took inspiration from films such as Hawk The Slayer and Conquest as well as 80s composers such as Vangelis. Of course it didn't end up sounding like any of those with loads of drones and reverb. I'm a big dungeon synth fan and I guess it's a combination of solar synth, noise synth, drone synth and soundtrack music. Possibly Dungeon Gaze. Anyway enjoy the Fantasy vibes.
It was recorded in one take with no overdubs/edits/samples with a PSR220 keyboard, an Akai drum machine, a theremin, a korg monotron, a doner b1, a behringer pro-1 and a bunch of pedals.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. Anxious

Q. How long have you been a part of the NYC music scene?
A. I guess a little over 3 years, I started meeting a lot of people when I started working at Bossa Nova Civic Club in December 2017

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. A collection of textural swells with some moments of broken beats. I cant really tell if it’s a sad mix or an uplifting mix, or both? I guess it depends on who’s listening. I think it might be both.
