“I guess we all look for home, before realising that home is where we are. Still the search for that core home accompanies us most of our life, but as the traveller walks, there may never be a final arrival. I have found many places on earth I can call home. The Ecuadorian Andes where I was born, the south of Alps where I grew up, Copenhagen and the Nordic seas, the banks of the Ganges,…

In the last 2 years I settled down in a house in the Danish countryside with my family, a new life with very little travelling. There I played with my instruments, friends of wood and metal, walking inward and listening to the resonance of that home seeking.

I chose these 4 pieces as an imaginary map for this journey we call world experience. They are all “first takes” (except track 4), with some editing and overdubs. Tracks 2 and 4 include looping.

“Himmel Bål” is the North. A night by a fireplace with some friends, from the flames some sparks fly up to the sky and blend with the stars. From this earth-walk into the vastness of the universe.

“Pasillo Oriental” is the East. The deep forest of the Ecuadorian “oriente”, the wild Bengal, or the dream of an even further land called Indonesia.

“Walking Home” is the West. West African harp with West German harmonica, slowly walking back to where I come from, the far yet familiar homeland.

“Si spezza la terra” is the South. My Italian language, warmth in my mouth, to speak the split that breaks hearts and soil, mythological Palestina.”

Juan (Tropico Del Cancer) has largely researched on traditional ceremonies and mystical arts from around the world, travelling throughout Ecuador, Colombia, India and Europe, visiting and learning from local masters and artists. In 2016 he graduated from The Danish National School of Performing Arts as musician for dance and modern dance classes. His focus and inspiration have often been the interrelation between sound and movement, dreams and earth, silence and awareness, chaos and simplicity; both in his compositions, collaborations as well as in his own practice of martial arts, yoga and meditation.
He lives in Denmark since 2002 where he has been percussionist in bands such as Valravn, Suna, Trypical Cumbia and Heilung, as well as singer-songwriter with Quemando Palabras.

El Coraje De Ser Pajaro

Improvisation on marimba over Shuar chants and forest sounds.

The chants "tracklist" (from the original recordings' notes):
- SUNG DUO. The woman starts this piece dancing; her many rapid small jumps make her bell belt jingle. The man then enters the lists, singing another "song". Only the beat is common to both.
- ANENT OF NUA TSANKU - tobacco woman. Femal puberty is marked by this ritual, during which the young initiate drinks tobacco juice. During the drunkenness which follows, the singer's mother taught her these specific anent.
- TUNA ANENT - anent of the waterfall. These two anent retrace the male initiation which takes place at puberty. Fasting, the repeated absorption of tobacco juice and the drinking of datura juice serve as a prelude to a bath in the waterfall where Autram, the strength dispenser, lives. The unique and premonitory vision which young men can acquire during this ritual is materialised by an encounter with Arutam and a message he delivers to them.
- ANENT FOR SHAKAIM. Shakaim is a mythical figure representing the working man. The woman evokes both the working qualities of her husband and her privileged relationship with Nunkui.
- TUMANK SOLO - followed by an anent chant. 
- ANENT TO NUNKUI. This is the "credo" of the Shuar woman: sung publicly, this anent signals that his owner wants to affirm her quality as a good farmer. . The intention of this anent is not secret, since it belongs to an outfit common to all women.

Anent: "to think, to love, to remember". The anent are instruments of propriatorey action which use the sound medium.
Heterophony: "coexistence of several sound emissions which don't try to be together but rather to affirm their individuality". With the Shuar one can note a tendency to a principle of superposition rather than unification.

The Shuar make a lot of music but speak little of it: for example, there is no word in shuar which could be equivalent to "music". 
The Shuar don't require silence before singing or playing.

The Shuar people are an indigenous people of Ecuador and Peru. They are members of the Jivaroan peoples, who are Amazonian tribes living at the headwaters of the Marañón River.

I played this piece as one take live looping on hammered dulcimer and acoustic guitar. It was made for the exhibition "Life in Spite of Tragedy" by the Russian photographer Svetlana Volodina, Copenhagen, March 2017.

From dialogues with leprosy people

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
For the past many years, photo journalist Svetlana Volodina has documented the lives of people affected by leprosy. She has travelled to five different countries and thorugh her lense she has witnessed how victims of the dissease continues their lives and try to find meaning in it, in spite of difficult life circumstances. This exhibition is not so much about the dissease itself as it is a testimony about human tragedy and the admirable motivation for people to find a way out in difficult situations, to find the strength in one self to overcome the difficulties.
Svetlana Volodina herself writes as epilogue:
"I believe that the more the essence of the work is reflected in the title “The Spirit Bloweth Where It Listeth”, an attempt to catch the Spirit of courage of people diagnosed with leprosy disease, a strength of a man without the body, but with the Spirit and Soul, capture the man, confronted with one’s destiny and one’s attempts to overcome, accept and keep the feeling of humanity with in oneself; it is look straight on a Disease and a Man sub specie aeternitatis.
And let myself complete this text with Silence and empty sheet – for untold and white and clean space is a Question itself."

A new song of Quemando Palabras, composed, recorded and produced during 2012 and released as free download on the last month of the year, while everybody talks about a radical change of consciousness, some understanding it as the end of the world as we know it.
A friend told me a few years ago about the possibility for the sun to explode, a situation where the life that we are used to live with all its luxury such as technology and stuff would not be possible anymore. What would happen then? How would humanity reacts in front of an extreme survival instinct?
I imagined that we will probably start killing each other, before realizing the deep love that actually unites us all. Only after that we will be ready to let go of everything and start all over again.
From slaughter to love, when everything will fall upon us.
