I recently discovered something amazing with one of the Grateful Dead tapes. I was listening to the show from Merriweather Post Pavilion on June 30th, 1985, and I found something very unusual in the recording itself right after the awesome performance of “The Other One” that goes into “Stella Blue.” As I was listening to it, I thought that the actual transition between “The Other One” into “Stella Blue” sounded disjointed, or abrupt, as though a small portion of the music was missing or something. The musical energy just seemed like it changed in an abnormal way. 

Since I was listening to the matrix source of this show, I thought I might have accidentally cut out a small piece of the music, so I put the tracks back in an editing timeline to play with them some. As an experiment, I thought I’d extend the transition section by actually stretching it a little bit, just to see if it sounded more normal in terms of musical time - and this is where I found something “hidden” in the recording. After I stretched out this section, I could hear a very quick “blip” sound. Since it sounded very abnormal in the recording, I honed in on this “blip” and stretched it out longer. After doing this, what I heard was a very “sped up” sound, like a tape fast-forwarding with the audio turned on. So, I stretched this section even more, which was only a few seconds at that point, to nearly two minutes in length. 

What I heard then was absolutely mind blowing: this “blip” actually turned out to be an entire performance of the concluding section of “Cryptical Envelopment”! What made this all the more bizarre is that I actually recognized the performance as being from September 3rd, 1985, at the Starlight Theatre, based on the way Jerry was singing the final lines of the song. So, what I initially thought was part of the Merriweather performance that somehow got squished on the recording, I now assumed that someone had spliced this weird anomaly into the source tape as some kind of practical joke. But of course, then it dawned on me that I was listening to a matrix, and both the soundboard and the audience tapes exhibited the same sonic issue. 

My only conclusion at this time is that the actual performance of “The Other One” from this show was of such a powerful and “time-bending” nature that it actually transported everybody in the show into a FUTURE show for an extremely short moment in time (kind of like that time-warp scene with Jodi Foster in the movie, “Contact,” based on the novel by Carl Sagan). It’s as though time itself was somehow magically intertwined with this future event and that these two shows were happening simultaneously on some different plane of existence. This seems to corroborate with scientific theories of time as being a “continuum” of reality, rather than having a strict “beginning,” “middle” and “end” point. 

Anyway, the sound on this stretched out segment of music sounded really bad due to the fact that I was stretching it so much in the first place – it sounded very muffled and boomy. So, I thought I would recreate what ACTUALLY happened on this evening of June 30th, 1985, as it is presented here, by splicing in the matrix source of “Cryptical Envelopment” from September 3rd, 1985, right after “The Other One.” Since this moment was incredibly short (about one sixtieth of a second), it appears nobody actually recalls it ever happening, kind of like when one cannot remember a dream he/she just had - and it’s interesting to note that dreams often operate without a real sense of time! Or at least dreams do not operate in “earthly” time, for that matter.
