This Fanfare on “Christ is Arisen”  begins with a theme that our Associate Pastor said reminded him of the roar of Aslan, the great and powerful lion from the C. S. Lewis book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe who as a character has many similarities to Christ. That theme serves as a ritornello while the choir sings the ancient hymn “Christ is Arisen” (CHRIST IST ERSTANDEN). Surrexit Christus! Surrexit Hodie!

Here is a vibrant Chorale Prelude with a vigorous ritornello on the hymn "I Will Sing My Maker's Praises" (SOLL'T ICH MEINEM GOTT) by Johann Schop (c. 1590-1644). Inspired by the hymn improvisations of Paul Manz (1919-2009), it is particularly effective to solo out the melody on a strong solo trumpet, but the melody may also be played with full organ. This setting may be used to introduce the hymn, as a Prelude or Postlude for a worship service, or as as a stand-alone, hymn-based work on an organ concert. I Will Sing My Maker's Praises (Chorale Prelude) - Martin Dicke

Here is an inventive and stirring setting of the Christmas carol "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" (VENI EMMANUEL) for SATB choir with optional strings. The choral edition is available in either English or Latin. Composed in a Neo-Renaissance style, it sets all seven verses modulating into four keys while passing the melody from voice to voice before concluding with sudden and surprising key changes that lead to a powerful cadence on the altered note of the Picardy third. It may be performed a capella, with keyboard, or with instruments. The instrumental parts are published separately as Fantasia on "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" in the following editions: String Quartet, String Ensemble/Orchestra, and Woodwind Quintet. This setting of "Of the Father's Love Begotten" is the second of Two Motets on Latin Christmas Hymns dedicated to the American Kantorei of St. Louis, Missouri and their founder the Rev. Robert Bergt. Musically, this setting intertwines two manifestations of the God incarnate: that which occurred with the birth of Christ and that which happens every time believers celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The primary textual and musical element is the ancient and beloved Christmas hymn “Of the Father’s Love Begotten.” This hymn is accompanied by an ostinato chant on the text "Divininum mysterium" ("Divine mystery"), which is the name given to the tune. The tune name comes from the first two words of the tune’s original text, a Sanctus trope that in the early church would have been sung during the celebration of Holy Communion. This motet is available in both an English and a Latin version.

Originally composed for piano, this setting of the tune FREU DICH SEHR by Robert Schumann has been arranged for a three-octave handbell choir. It is an easy Level 1 setting that may also be played by tone chimes. The tune is often sung to the Advent text "Comfort, Comfort Ye My People" or to "Praise to You and Adoration." it was first published as No. 4 in Schumann's Album for the Young, Op. 68. This is an arrangement of the Lutheran chorale "Have Mercy On Me, O Lord God" (ERBARM DICH MEIN). Originally composed for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 721), it has here been arranged for brass quartet and organ. The hymn is a paraphrase of Psalm 51. Here is a serene. joyful, and triumphant setting of the Christmas carol "O Come, All Ye Faithful" (ADESTE FIDELIS) for SATB choir with optional strings. The choral edition is available in either English or Latin. The work may also be played by stings alone (String Quartet, String Ensemble, or String Orchestra). The first verse is taken from an arrangement by 19th century composer Samuel Webbe (1740-1816). The other stanzas are original. The choral version begins with a soloist inviting the faithful to join a great, joyful, and triumphal procession to Bethlehem. The full choir joins by repeating the last part of first stanza, a lost tradition that is evident in early hymnals and arrangements of this carol. In successive stanzas, each voice part takes a turn leading the joyous procession by singing the melody. Pivot modulations, interesting harmonies, soaring descants, and unique vocal textures characterize this arrangement. It will move both performers and audiences alike.
