The Originals 25 Years Later

“One More for the Road” is a tribute to Paul Kent, the lead guitarist featured in the original 1998 recordings. Paul was an incredible musician—vastly more skilled than the rest of us—but he was also a humble man. He never showed off. Instead, he played to our level, adding depth and texture to what we were doing, elevating it without overshadowing it.

These original recordings were made in Padworth, Berkshire, using a simple tape recorder and a couple of microphones. The sound quality isn’t perfect, but the spirit is real. We had some unforgettable times in Padworth, and I think we were all gutted when it came to an end—life took over, as it does.

This version has a raw energy you just don’t find anymore. Midway through the song, there’s a long sustained note that turns into feedback—something that might sound like a clever trick, but it wasn’t planned at all. What really happened? I stopped mid-note for a cigarette break, just held the guitar there as it rang out. Paul glanced over at me, probably thinking “what the hell is he doing?” but true to form, we locked right back in with perfect timing when the section kicked back in. Totally unspoken. Total chemistry. That was Paul—sharp, steady, and always in the pocket.

Maybe Baby was one of the first songs we worked on and Paul really added to the sound and this remains one of my favourite songs.

What started as a throwaway jam—just me and Paul riffing on a variation of Guns N’ Roses’ Out to Get Me—quickly turned into something else. We’d play it constantly, mostly because it wound up Jason on drums. He’d roll his eyes and ignore us, but this one time—this one recording—he actually joined in. We didn’t even notice in the moment, just rode the groove. It wasn’t until I got home and played the tape back that I realised we’d stumbled onto something with a full song structure, like it had been waiting to happen. So I sat down and wrote lyrics over it. That’s how They Wont Stop Me was born—from a jam that started as a wind-up, and ended up as one of our tightest songs.

Finally, there are instrumental versions, also generated using the original tracks as a foundation. Paul could have played these effortlessly—he had a rare gift for hearing something once and recreating it perfectly.

On July 5th, 2025, the stage lights dimmed one final time for the legends who defined a genre. Black Sabbath — the godfathers of metal — closed the final chapter of a monumental story that began in the factories and fog of Birmingham and changed the sound of music forever.

This wasn’t just the end of a band. It was the final bow of a movement. Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler — names that don’t just belong to musicians, but to architects of an empire built on thunderous riffs, dark poetry, and raw defiance.

Ten years ago, the song Godfathers Of Metal was written as a tribute to their legacy. It was a battle cry, a salute, and a thank you. But now, with the amps cooling after that last thunderous note, it takes on new meaning. It's no longer just a celebration — it’s a eulogy for the end of an era.

With the updated release of Godfathers Of Metal following their final concert, we honour not just the sound they created, but the shadow they cast across generations of heavy music. Their influence is eternal. Their legend, immortal.

Pauls passing has left a hole in my life and ultimately my desire to continue to write these songs has gone, maybe I will be back at some point but for now my inspiration and driving force has left me.
