Ramon Mappala is one of ten thousand X-D’s who were detained after the dictator Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law in the Philippines. Adis Nuhanović is from Bosnia and came to the United States when he was 13 with his Serbian mother and Muslim father after escaping the war in Bosnia. After the attacks on the World Trade Towers in 2001, Ramon and Adis talk about their experiences and feelings post-9/11 as two people who had lived through martial law and war. Judith Sloan lives in the most diverse county in the United States, Queens, New York, the new “Ellis Island”. Queens is home to the largest mix of refugees and immigrants, a borough where people speak over 162 different languages,. As an American-born citizen, and grandchild of immigrants who fled war to seek a better life, Judith teaches and mentors college and high school students. Among her many students are young people who are undocumented immigrants. What’s Your Status is a testimony and witnessing of how the culture of fear, shifts in immigration law, and big-bureaucracy impacts her students, fellow professors and teachers, and neighbors.

Being a teenager can be really hard. Especially if you’ve flunked out of school. Or your dad has disappeared. Or you’re incarcerated at a juvenile detention center and don’t see much hope for the future. And teaching those teenagers can be pretty hard too, as Judith Sloan can attest. She works with at-risk youth, teaching theater, writing, and juggling in alternative schools and jails. Most of her students are angry and at first reluctant to express themselves. But often, with some coaxing, they eventually do. And then Judith finds ways to shape their words and expressions into stories that are part-drama, part-documentary, and part-music. One story in particular, Sweeping Statements, explores this process and the complicated lives of Judith’s students.

Hosted by writer/audio artist/actor Judith Sloan, with guest artists singer/actress Meah Pace, musician/performer Emily Wexler, choreographer/manager of Jamaica Performing Arts Center Courtney Ffrench, singer Priya Darshini, musician and artist Claire Marie Lim. 

In a time of xenophobic national policies and a heightened discussion among progressives about issues of race, class, gender and ethnicity, this event aims to elicit and listen to stories that reveal ways that multi-ethnic, multi-racial collaborations address these issues with nuance and accountability. This live event reveals the behind-the scenes process of creating a play that deals with difficult dialogues. Audience members are encouraged to bring stories about dialogues that they have had that were able to bridge a conflict or address misunderstandings. How do we have open conversations in a climate of cancel culture?

Actress/Radio Producer Judith Sloan produces Dayenu, a story/commentary with music by Frank London and Judith Sloan. As Jews all over the world observe Passover, Sloan looks at the complexity of Passover, questioning the meaning of Dayenu (Enough), asking when the world will have had enough of war, torture, and hatred, and asks what it will take to share the planet. Winner Missouri Review National Audio Competition, 2009. The word "Dayenu" means approximately, "it would have been enough for us" or "it would have sufficed." At Passover, Jewish families the world over gather together to recount the epic story of how the Jewish exodus from Egypt. The Passover seder is a special event steeped in symbolism ... The assembled group reads from a "haggadah" (ha-GAH-dah) retelling the story of Exodus. Certain symbolic foods are eaten. These traditions go back thousands of years. Judith Sloan looked through the haggadah her father left her. When Judith sings the song "dayenu" (die-EH-new) ... she considers that word…she's thinking about hardship, war and torture and whether we've had "enough." She's thinking about food and water and natural resources and wondering if we'll ever have "enough." She’s thinking about terror and revenge and wondering when we’ll have enough. She’s thinking about what it takes to ‘talk to your enemy’, in the hopes that we will, as a species, have had enough terror and war.

A Tattle Tale: Eyewitness in Mississippi is a docudrama produced by journalists Laura Sydell and Judith Sloan for National Public Radio. For more information: http://www.earsay.org/projects/performance/467-2/. The documentary includes excerpts from the play A Tattle Tale by Judith Sloan and Warren Lehrer, about four officers who blew the whistle on police brutality and abuse in the county jails in Mississippi as well as  interviews with people connected and involved in the story in Mississippi and Washington DC. In 1996, Laura Sydell and Judith Sloan interviewed the sheriff, the D.A., someone at the Justice Department, Joseph Lowery from the SCLC, deputy sheriff Andrea Gibbs, along with other participants in the story. In the play Judith portrays Andrea Gibbs, a muckraking southern woman with a sharp ironic wit, riding a roller coaster through an incestuous Mississippi legal system made up of frightening, odd and quirky characters. A Tattle Tale, the story of a teenage runaway, turned deputy sheriff, turned whistleblower, bears witness to coming of age in the face of hypocrisy and lawlessness. Inspired by the true story of Andrea Gibbs, who in 1989, sworn to uphold the law, blew the whistle on her superior officers for the brutal treatment of juvenile offenders in detention centers and prisons in Mississippi. In 1993, her efforts culminated in federal investigations and closings of prisons that were deemed “barbaric and unfit for human habitation.”

A Tattle Tale: Eyewitness in Mississippi

 Judith Sloan is an audio artist, writer, radio producer, human rights activist, actor, and poet whose work combines humor, pathos and a love of the absurd. For over twenty years, Sloan has been producing and presenting interdisciplinary works in audio and theater, portraying voices often ignored by the mass media. Her solo performances and plays include: Denial of the Fittest (nominated for best comedy performance at the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival), Responding to Chaos, Peace is Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Kill, A Tattle Tale: eyewitness in Mississippi, and Crossing the BLVD: strangers, neighbors, aliens in a new America. Her commentaries, plays, poetry and documentaries have aired on National Public Radio, New York Public Radio, WBEZ Chicago, PRI, BBC, and listener sponsored stations throughout the U.S. Sloan has received awards for her audio mixes, radio documentaries and work with various musicians integrating storytelling, acting, sampling and multiple languages into symphonic pieces, live performance with actors and musicians, and radio. Sloan was commissioned to write the libretto for 1001 Voices: A Symphony for a New America, with music by Frank London and animations by Warren Lehrer, which premiered in April 2012 by the Queens Symphony Orchestra. Her multi-layered theater work has been produced in theatres and festivals throughout the U.S. and abroad including: LaMama E.T.C, The Public Theatre, The Theatre Workshop (Edinburgh, Scotland), The Smithsonian Institution, the Market Theatre (Johannesburg, SA), etc. She has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Theatre Week, The London Stage, San Francisco Chronicle, among others. Her recent play, YO MISS! Teaching Inside the Cultural Divide (2012) is being developed in collaboration with Morgan Jenness from Abrams Artist Agency. She received a 2013 individual artist grant from Queens Council on the Arts to write and perform a new piece using a combination of music, sound and voice called, Anecdotal Evidence.
