‘A New Home’, brings children on an audio journey from the present to the past, to tell the historical stories of some of the people who came to make their home in Ireland, and of others who left to find a new home elsewhere. 

The series tells the stories of Huguenot, Viking and Plantation settlers who moved to Ireland, as well as emigrants who travelled through Ellis Island to America, Famine migrants who made their way to Canada; and others who emigrated to England for work in the 1960s.  Producer Judy-Meg Ní Chinnéide brings these historical experiences to life and shows how Ireland has been shaped by the movement of people.

A New Home: Stories of Ireland's Migrations (RTÉ Kids)

Saoirse is on a tour of the museum with her mum. She is shown an old bible from 1680, which the museum curator says has been baked in an oven. The historical story begins…

Myriam is fourteen years old when she and her Huguenot family decide to leave France in secret, to avoid detection by the authorities who are determined that they should convert from the Protestant faith to the Catholic faith. Plans are made for them to be hidden on board a ship that will take them to England before they travel on to Ireland, but the family’s plans are thrown into disarray when Myriam’s brother Jean becomes gravely ill. Myriam must travel to Dublin with her baby sister on her own.

A New Home: France to Ireland (The Huguenots, late 17th Century)

Saoirse is helping her mum get the Christmas decorations down from the attic, when she finds an old
black and white postcard from 1900. The historical story begins…

Patrick, ten years old, travels to New York with his mother and little sister, hoping to find her uncle John, who emigrated to America ten years earlier. After passing the medical inspection at Ellis Island, they are free to go, but they find that New York is less welcoming than they had expected, and that Patrick’s uncle John is nowhere to be found.

A New Home: Ireland to America (Irish Emigration, early 20th Century)

Saoirse visits the Museum and sees a small wooden boat in a glass cabinet. The curator of the exhibition explains that the boat would have been carved as a toy for a Viking child over two thousand years ago. The historical story begins…

Alva, a twelve-year-old, lives in Viking Dublin with her family. Her father came to Dublin as a young man from Norway. As a trader, he travels to many different places and one night brings home a young slave to help with the work. Alva befriends the boy, despite her father forbidding her to. When fire breaks out, the fate of the family hangs in the balance.

A New Home: Norway to Ireland (The Vikings, circa 920)

Saoirse is on her way to Liverpool with her mum. When they stop at Dublin City Docklands to wait for the ferry, Saoirse sees the Famine Memorial. The historical story begins… 

It’s 1847, and sixteen-year-old Margaret, her little sister Ellen and her father, have arrived in Dublin to get the ferry to England, from where they board a ship to Grosse Ile in Quebec. Margaret’s father develops a fever and is placed in quarantine, but Margaret is determined that she and Ellen and won’t be separated from one another.

A New Home: Ireland to Canada (The Famine, mid-19th century)

Cian is on a school tour and visiting the Walls of Derry. The teacher explains that they were built to protect English and Scottish plantation settlers within the city. The historical story begins…

Elizabeth travels to Ulster with her baby and her husband Jim in 1616, when they are offered the opportunity of farming a piece of land. They begin to explore their new home, but they soon learn that the woods around their house are out of bounds as not only are there wolves, but native Irish people, known as ‘woodkern’ live there and operate as bandits. Elizabeth settles into her new home, but she soon comes face-to-face with a danger she has never known before.
