Zosia Hołubowska (geboren 1988 in Polen) ist eine queere Klangkünstlerin, Musikerin und Kuratorin, die seit 2016 in Wien lebt und arbeitet. Hołubowska erforscht Archive der osteuropäischen Volksmusik sowie Traditionen der Magie, Kräuterkunde und Dämonologie und experimentiert mit archaischen Gesangsarten, um queere Klanglandschaften, Installationen, Performances und Audio-Essays zu kreieren. Sie* entwerft auch Sound für Performances und Videokunst. Seit kurzem kuratiert und koordiniert sie* das queere Synthesizer-Labor Sounds Queer?, wo sie* Workshops zu elektronischer und Synthesizer-Musik für Frauen, queere und nicht-binäre Menschen organisiert, moderiert und durchführt. Derzeit ist sie* Ph.D. Fellow an der Academy of Fine Arts. Ihre Forschung beschäftigt sich mit experimentellen queeren Methodologien in der Klangkunst und dem Singen als Prozess der Wissensbildung. They explore archives of folk Eastern European music, as well as traditions of magic, herbalism, and demonology. Hołubowska experiments with archaic ways of singing to create queer soundscapes, installations, performances, and audio essays. They also design sound for performances and video art. Most recently they curated and coordinated the queer synth laboratory Sounds Queer? where they organize, facilitate, and run workshops on electronic and synthesizer music for women, queer and non-binary people. Currently, Hołubowska is a Ph.D. Fellow at the Academy of Fine Arts. Their research deals with experimental queer methodologies in sound art and singing as a knowledge creation process. Hołubowska has performed in Mumok (Austria), Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao, Basque Country), La Gaite Lyrique (Paris, France), AMOQA (Athens, Greece), Sluice Gallery (London, UK); their last sound installation was shown at the Research Pavilion in Venice (Italy).

Lookng back at Zosia Hołubowska's body/sound performance 'Siemieniec' at the Sonic Territories Festival 2021 we talk about her artistic approach and sources of inspiration. 

'Siemieniec' is a sound/body performance ritual addressing so-called free-LGBT zones in Poland. Siemieniec was a Polish ritual dance, making the dancers lose and find the rhythm until total exhaustion, connected to fertility magic. The performance seeks to undo the archive, by searching for queerable moments in Polish traditional music and magic or engaging them in exploring the queer experience in the Polish context. In this instance, Siemieniec is a rave that celebrates the queer life and queer right to exist.

For Sonic Territories Extended Artistic Director Mimie Maggale invited CHRA. They had quite a real talk about what home is and how the pandemic influenced artistic creation. But also got serious about the war in the Ukraine, feminism and the meaning of Journalism during this years of crisis.

🖤 Chra is the Moniker of the Viennese producer, author and radio/TV presenter Christina Nemec. After a period of experimenting with low frequencies and noise effects, chra started to work with sine waves processed through tape recorder and other analogue and digital tools to allude to landscapes, territories, silence and extraordinary and extreme situations. She is also a member of Shampoo Boy and PASAJERA OSCURA and runs her own queer and feminist music label comfortzone.

The interview took place on Februray 22th, 2022 via Skype.

Science fiction inspired ambient & synth sounds meet field recordings and a voice that seems to come from other worlds. It is a collection of artefacts woven into dark-beautiful soundscapes, longing for an utopia. What will post-capitalist landscapes look like?
