Frankee is one of those producers that embody the true spirit of drum & bass. He's a fearless artist who's not afraid to try something different, blending up influences and styles and packing his tunes with plenty of chunky beats, lashings of filthy bass and an abundance of experimental dives into just about every other face-melting genre out there!

Proving the above to be true with mighty aplomb, the A side to Frankee's latest single for Ram Records is about as disturbingly heavy as it comes. Kicking off with the aptly named 'Gully' we're served up a track that means serious business. Immense horn-like synths pave the way for intense lasers that penetrate every inch of you before you're washed away with a tsunami of rumbling bass. Gully indeed, and likely to cause utter dance floor devastation whenever it is dropped.

Next up Frankee takes us on a different journey, opting for a stunningly beautiful track, soaked with haunting melodies and crisp, rolling breakbeats. Featuring vocals from Janine Small 'Away' progresses with electro house style synth stabs and emotive hooks before dropping down to an ethereal breakdown providing precious moments to gather yourself before the breaks come rolling in again. 'Away' is a gorgeous departure from the skull-cracking weight of 'Gully' and proves Frankee is a producer with plenty of tricks up his sleeve.

'Away' featured on Andy C's recent 'Nightlife 6' compilation, having been a staple of his sets for months and with such diversity and original ideas on display it's easy to see why.

Locked away in sonic solitude, Mind Vortex have been building these next four cuts with absolute precision. And being such a pivotal signing for the RAM imprint, it’s no surprise that this EP has been met with almost unbearable anticipation.

Few acts capture the vibrancy and pent-up energy that Mind Vortex commands. Another charged assault on the ears, the ‘Colours EP’ is definitely a return to form. An impressive feat, having already set the bar high with tracks like ‘Hotbox’ being showcased on label head Andy C’s revered Nightlife series.

With an authoritative vocal sample leading you ear-drums first into the mix, ‘Underworld’ is foreboding from its first bass riff. A jittering coaster ride, this is roller explodes on impact, taking you deep into its namesake. The artists manipulate synth in a way which often can’t be matched, distorting sounds and smashing the prototype to pieces with carefully fashioned hits of drum. 

One of their biggest releases to date, expect this EP to resound in both underground dancehalls and the headphones of dnb-heads everywhere. These four blasting production behemoths will ensure that Mind Vortex stay on the agenda’s forefront.

And yes, I did say it to myself, in my head, after listening to it over and over again; but the fact remains and it is what it is. The Critical Music signed drum & bass producer, Emperor’s'She Said VIP’ – which will be exclusively available from the Critical store this Monday – is superlatively frenetic, heaving it’s way out of the rousing build up introduction with the sort of lurching industrial bassline that’ll set most dancefloors afire. Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

‘Sawn Off’ rolls out next; it’s a grittier track than its predecessor, with a conundrum of hi-hats and aggressive drum patterns. Pounding pads take you towards a colossal break, heighten by the effect of a cleverly placed sample. The track ricochets throughout, not losing momentum or impact, with an intricately weaved structure, one only achievable by a team who’ve been running the game for decades.  

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove they’re still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact.
