Consta que o psiquiatra britânico Humphry Osmond (1917 - 2004) introduziu o termo psicodélico numa reunião da Academia de Ciências de Nova York em 1957, descrevendo o já referido significado da palavra psicodélico como:
 "o que revela a mente" 
e o definiu como:
"claro, suave e não contaminado por outras associações".
