PREMIERE: Juando - Let's Do Something Fun [Mostly Cozy]

Thick droplets of water hit the basin with a loud thud, like a ticking clock counting down to an unknown event. The room was cold and damp, the wall paper had begun peeling all over and thick layers of dust had settled on every surface; it was no place for a person to inhabit, at least not any more. Once upon a time this room and the home it was in had been a sanctuary to many; a place that brought comfort and happiness; a place that was loved and looked after - now it lay dormant, a relic of the past forgotten with time.

Doline's new release marks two big milestones for the artist and its home Grid Records; a debut album and the first long player on the label. The French artist and Sound Pelligrino affiliate has already released on the imprint back in 2021 and this follow up, Dompte-regard, is another showcase of his deftness at sound design and playing with mood and tempo. It's refined as ever, pairing melodic touches and glistening synth lines, which have it sitting somewhere between the club and home listening.

@Freerangerecords boss @Jimpster is back with another ridiculously classy EP fusing deep and soulful house with afro edges as he pays tribute to the South African deep house vibe that he is a well known supporter and advocate for. It's a country that he has visited on many occasions, and which is hailed by many as the Deep House capital of the world.

Featuring four tracks, South African vocalist Mavhungu stars on the lead track 'Tribute' which also see's two remixes from Yoruba maestro Osunlade. It's a truly inspiring slice of house music.

Our premier today is the bubbling deep house bliss of Jacidswing with it's acid 303 B-line, smooth euphoric pads and wicked percussion. It's a hypnotic and heart wrenching piece of music and another incredible release for Freerange.

UK producer Renslink calls IM103 his first effort focused on the dancefloor, but it belies a lifetime steeped in it. This is prime material for the most advanced of DJs.

The first cut, Static, blends heavy, droning atmospheric sound design with the half-time template of dubstep, complete with jungle vocals. Before reaching the first half, however, it goes into a healthy techno gallop, making the track a perfect set opener if drama is your thing.

From that we go into the three-on-two mindbend of In My Mind, full of beautiful rhythmic trickery and rave culture nods in the sampled female vocals.

Cenotaph feels like a Pinch & Mumdance dub that they kept for themselves around the Control/Strobelight era, all rolling, persistent kick, dubbed-out dready vocals and dystopian hoover.

In Touching The Void we find a moment of drama and relative tenderness, as cinematic strings and choir soar over a busy rolling breakbeat. Occasionally, the proceedings are punctuated by a reese bass and bleeps fill that keep it fresh (an you on your toes).

Closer Silence is a mutant dembow wobbler with alien vocals by Nivalis, like dancehall for after the nuclear apocalypse, when we’ll have all the extra limbs we’ll need to dance to music like this.

Renslink - Touching The Void

New York City-based DJ/producer Nickodemus, co-founder of the world renowned Turntables on the Hudon parties, pioneering connector of worldwide and club sounds, shares “Mamaciterranea”, an exclusive cut from ‘Soul & Science’ forthcoming album for his own Wonderwheel Recordings imprint. 

Ecuadorian singer Huaira is based out of Quito and is one of the leading names in the emerging Ecuadorian scene of young musicians and producers seeking inspiration from folklore and folk music reimagining what it could sound like in the 21st century.  She joins southern Italian violinist Mauro Durante and oft-Berlin-based producer Captures, for this one-off collaboration with Nickodemus. 

This multi-continental collaboration is an exciting addition to Nickodemus' latest album Soul & Science, a celebration of the human spirit in all its multifaceted glory and a reminder that, as emerging technologies continue to reshape our world, we must not forget the soulful, magical essence that makes us human.

Nickodemus gave us an inside take on “Mamaciterranea”: “The song started with my desire to make a mid tempo modern song based on the ancient Tarantella folkloric music of South Italy. The rhythms & pizzicata style of violin playing (played by Mauro Durante of the band Greccanico Salentino) are meant to make the victim of a spider bite working in the fields, dance away the poison. I invited Huaira to write & sing lyrics about this process while also referencing her practice of leading Ayuhuasca ceremonies around the world, hence the fitting lyrics in both English & Spanish playing on the title “Mamaciterranea” for the Mediterranean woman as well Mamacita Araña (spider woman).
