Randy, Randall Mann, and I met in 2007. A cornerstone in our friendship is an ongoing conversation about parallels between poetry and making paper - limitations, compression, malleability. We have been working circling around a collaboration since 2021.

Mann is the author of six collections of poetry, including Deal: New and Selected Poems, published by Copper Canyon Press in May 2023. He is also the author of a book of criticism, The Illusion of Intimacy: On Poetry (Diode Editions, 2019). His writing has appeared in the Adroit Journal, Asian American Literary Review, Lit Hub, Poetry, and San Francisco Chronicle. He lives in San Francisco.

“A New Syntax” is the final poem included in Mann’s Deal: New and Selected Poems. In this recording, Mann reads the poem aloud for the first time and shares its context.

Dr. Hawkins is an astronomer, Senior Scientist, and Director of the Osher Fellowship at the Exploratorium. Dr. Venkatesan is a cosmologist, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at University of San Francisco, and an advocate of preserving dark skies and active in space policy.

Ursula Le Guin delivered the commencement speech at Bryn Mawr College in 1986. There is no known existing recording. Elisabeth Le Guin agreed to read the speech 38 years later for this recording.

Elisabeth Le Guin is the eldest child of Charles Le Guin, a professor, writer, and master gardener, and departed Ursula K. Le Guin, a well-known writer of fantasy and science fiction. A musician, scholar, and writer, Elisabeth Le Guin was professor of Musicology at UCLA from 1997-2022, when she became Emerita. She is still involved with the School of Music as a colleague, mentor, facilitator, and informal student adviser. Her research explores the interfaces between written, spoken, and sung words.
