A series of stories on wrongful convictions have appeared recently in major news papers. The topic is of interest to me for two reasons. First, I served time in a federal prison after entering into a plea agreement. That means my case never went to trial. I often wonder what the end result would have been had the case gone to trial.

Wrongful Convictions

In November 2022, the cryptocurrency exchange FTX was trading at an all-time low.  About a month later, the Department of Justice issued an indictment against FTX’s founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, who was living in the Bahamas at the time. Fast forward two weeks, and Bankman-Fried is extradited to the United States.  Two days later, he’s released on 250 million dollars bail.

Presumed Innocent, Detained Anyway

About a week before the Christmas holiday, the New York Times ran a story on George Santos, the newly elected Congressman representing New York’s Third Congressional District.  Santos beat Robert Zimmerman by nearly 10%. It’s not that surprising that the Times would run a story on a freshman Congressman, representing parts of Long Island.
