Seven Kinds Of Fake Pleasures

Julia A. Miller is a guitarist, composer, improviser, sound artist, visual artist, curator and educator.  This soundcloud is particularly focused on presentation of student work, and work related to her teaching.

The Art of the Guitar concert series, presented by Julia A. Miller at Elastic Arts in Chicago, grew from an SAIC class of the same name.  Both the series and the class span the history of the modern guitar and related instruments from the Renaissance to the present, particularly to the avant.  Important considerations include, but are not limited to, guitar construction (classical, acoustic, and electric), the guitar as a model in artistic practice, and guitar performance practice.  Art of the Guitar is particularly concerned with a synthesis of styles and techniques, and cross pollination. 

Intro to Sound is a classic SAIC Sound Department offering, which provides an introduction to principles of sound and listening, guidance on creative projects, and an introduction to the studio.

Since 2012, Julia Miller and Elbio Barilari have performed together and with many notable musicians in the band Volcano Radar.  In 2016, Volcano Radar released the first studio album, “Electro Parables/Electro Parábolas” on the netlabel Pan y Rosas and on iTunes.  Volcano Radar has been featured on KFJC radio (Los Altos, CA) and WNUR, and is currently recording a second studio album with legendary Cuban reedist Paquito D’Rivera.  Julia’s solo electric guitar record was also released on Pan y Rosas.  Julia is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Sound at the School of the Art Institute (SAIC) in Chicago, and is Guitar Professor at Carthage College in Kenosha.
