Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do my show live last week, so I chose to replay a pre-recorded mix from May 2022, which I sent to Point Blank Radio the day before it's broadcast. I selected this particular mix because it holds a special connection to James Baker, aka ReKaB, who very sadly and unexpectedly passed away the weekend before.

Back in 2022, alongside my weekly show on PB, I also hosted a monthly show called Rhythm Transitions on another station which no longer exists. In one of those episodes, I played three tracks from ReKaB’s Back In Flight EP on Nightflight Records. Shortly after, James reached out to say how much he enjoyed the show and asked if I could send it to him so he could listen at work. Following that, he kindly shared more of his music with me.

Since his passing, I’ve spent time listening through his Bandcamp catalogue, much of which I hadn’t heard before. The sheer amount of music he created, and the legacy he’s left behind, is truly impressive. His work carries so much emotion, and it has touched me deeply.

A year after that 2022 mix, I contacted James to ask if he might be interested in working on a project for my label, JuJu Muzik, alongside the legendary Harry Dennis (Jungle Wonz, The It). The track became Infinitely. At the time, James told me he had a Larry Heard-inspired piece that he felt would be a perfect fit and that my timing in reaching out was spot on. I sent him Harry’s acapella, and he returned with a stunning, deep, and timeless mix that completed the project beautifully. For this, I’ll always be grateful.

It was a huge honour to have ReKaB on the label. Thank you, James, for your kindness, your artistry, and the timeless, soul-touching music you’ve gifted us.

Rest in peace, James. The music lives on X
