Kafana is a term used in the former Yugoslav countries to describe a social gathering place; usually well equipped with alcoholic beverages and coffee. It also happens to be the name of my favorite restaurant in NYC. ;)

This month's mix is slightly adventurous. It contains: ups and downs, riding rhythms, sporadic percussion, and deep lulls followed by rising crescendos.

vyvn #12 Story of Something (Mixed by Mykola) [December 2014]

Hey All,

In traditional vyvn form, I started off this mix with music that’s melodic and brooding. I highly recommend you go and listen to the intro track front to back, as I was only able to include the first four minutes of it here. Rest assured, the Petrels remix of Without Boxes is a masterpiece through and through. As the mix progressed, I tried to use songs that feel like they could crush everything in their path, tearing through the very fabric of space and time. No doubt, songs like this are plentiful at the moment. However, the really good tracks have not only this quality, but are somehow calm and hypnotic. These producers have mastered the art of blending the strong and the serene: Noraj Cue, Jonas Saalbach, Dustin Nantais, and the likes of many others releasing on Manual, Eimusika, and Monologues. Although I didn’t include any Steyoyoke tracks, they are an example of one label releasing a lot of amazing music similar to this new M.A.N.D.Y. banger, with a signature sound that sounds like a bunch of air whooshing around. If you attended the second #vyvn event or our recent rooftop party, you probably heard a lot of tracks like this!

Lastly, I wouldn’t normally close out a mix with such an upbeat track, but this month I finished off the mix with an absolutely mental remix of Engie by Reinier Zonneveld, which I’ve been dying to use for awhile. Reinier is an example of one of those artists who’s doing great things in what is becoming a rapidly re-emerging progressive house scene.
